The key to scoring tons of points and attaining higher ranks in Resident Evil Village’s Mercenaries mode is to take down enemies as quickly as possible without taking much damage. Doing this will ensure that the combo meter stays active as players make their way through a level. If that meter stays up during the entire Mercenaries level the final score will be massive, which will lead to higher ranks.
This means that killing enemies quickly is one of the most important aspects of Resident Evil Village’s Mercenaries mode. If players get their hands on higher damage items early in a run, it’s going to be much easier to quickly take out enemies. There are, essentially two options for high damage weapons. For the best chance at a SSS rank in RE Village’s Mercenaries, players can either use the shotgun or the sniper rifle.

While the sniper rifle deals a ton of damage with one shot, it takes a bit more precision to be successful. If a player can quickly target enemies with the rifle, they could speed things up even more by dealing damage from afar. That said, most Resident Evil Village players will likely have more success with a shotgun because it takes less precision. If they can get up in their enemies’ faces, they should be able to take them out very quickly.
To that end, players should begin most runs by selling off their pistol and its ammo. Instead, they should focus on upgrading their shotgun as much as possible. Soon, the gun will mow through almost everything in Mercenaries mode. In fact, it might worth selling some or most of the healing items the game gives to players. After all, this mode is more about speed than anything else. If players are taking damage in Resident Evil Village’s Mercenaries mode, they won’t be able to sustain that combo meter for very long in the first place.
Taking things a step further, players should make sure that they are prioritizing upgrades that increase their speed and ammo capacity. That should make the shotgun even more deadly, as they’ll need to reload less often. In theory, this should lead to even faster runs, as they’ll be spraying more bullets as they race around the map.
Of course, this strategy only works for the first set of levels in Resident Evil Village‘s Mercenaries mode. Once they move on to the next set, players will need to use a new item pool. However, using the shotgun in the early stages should give players a good example of the tools they need to make it through Mercenaries mode.
