Resident Evil Village: Every Brutal Injury Ethan Somehow Survives

Capcom’s Resident Evil Village features probably one of the strongest main characters in gaming with Ethan Winters. Although he’s not a superhero and he’s really just an average guy thrown into extraordinary circumstances, Ethan can take quite the beating. Winters gets thrown through the ringer repeatedly throughout Resident Evil Village’s story, surviving things no one should be able to survive.

Although there’s an explanation for why Ethan is so durable in Resident Evil Village, for a good chunk of the game it’s not terribly obvious. Because of this, for hours on end players are just watching Ethan get ripped apart, quite literally limb from limb, and aren’t sure if they should be buying in to the most extreme gore or not. It’s not terribly new territory for the character, though, as Ethan had his hand hacked off in Resident Evil 7 once before.

For some Resident Evil fans, it may just seem like Capcom has no understanding of human anatomy or resilience, until its revealed later on towards the end of Resident Evil Village that Ethan was actually infected by the Molded in the beginning of Resident Evil 7, so he’s able to heal and withstand all of the grizzly injuries without succumbing to them. With that said, here’s all of the brutal wounds that Ethan suffers in Resident Evil Village.

Within minutes of arriving to the village, Ethan encounters one of the many deadly, intelligent lycan populating RE8’s abandoned town and gets two of his fingers ripped clean off. It’s not exactly the welcoming party Ethan wants from the people who appear to be holding his daughter captive. To add insult to injury, Ethan later slams his injured hand into a wall out of frustration. It’s also a clear indication that Capcom really hates Ethan Winters’ hands, as the developers continue to give him hand injuries at the start of each game and proceeds to destroy them throughout both Resident Evil entries.

After dealing with lycans for a bit, Ethan decides to venture into the giant looming castle to meet Resident Evil Village’s vampires. The family captures Ethan and string him up, putting some incredibly sharp hooks through his hands before hanging him up in a room. Ethan eventually rips the hooks out of his hands to escape, leaving gnarly gashes in both hands.

Ethan once again loses his hand in Resident Evil Village. He stapled his hand back on in Resident Evil 7, but this time, he just pours some liquid all over his stump and slaps the severed hand back on.

As Ethan is progressing through the castle, he reaches a locked door and attempts to pull a lever before Lady Dimitrescu uses her sharp claws to slice Ethan’s hand off. It’s only a small setback for him, though.

Ethan encounters a lot of different creatures in Resident Evil Village, like lycan, vampires, and just generally strange Capcom creations. After getting pretty familiar with the village, Ethan gets attacked by a giant werewolf that tears his stomach apart and tosses him around. Somehow, he doesn’t actually seem to be that bothered by it, and for Ethan it appears to be more of an inconvenience than anything else. Comparatively, it’s like Ethan was just being tossed around by a bear and then casually decides what he wants for dessert.

Perhaps the most baffling “injury” Ethan withstands is when he meets the main antagonist of Resident Evil VillageMother Miranda. After a brief monologue, she rips Ethan’s heart out and leaves him for dead. The player then switches to Chris Redfield for a bit until he eventually finds Mia, who explains Ethan’s strange abilities. It then switches back to Ethan where he learns he was infected by the Mold and can, somehow, function without a heart for a brief period of time. After battling Mother Miranda, he does apparently die, seemingly as a combined result of pushing his body too far, not having his most vital organ, and sitting in the blast radius of a massive explosive.
