Reneé Rapp Talks Writing Mean Girls’ New Opening Song In Digital Release Featurette

Mean Girls is out now on digital platforms, and is full of bonus content diving into the making of the film. The movie is both a remake of the 2004 classic starring Lindsay Lohan and an adaptation of the stage musical, which premiered in 2017 before jumping to Broadway the following year. The 2024 movie stars Angourie Rice, Reneé Rapp, Auli’I Cravalho, and more, and has a screenplay by original film writer and 30 Rock star Tina Fey.

Screen Rant is excited to debut a behind-the-scenes clip from the digital home release of Mean Girls as part of its continued coverage of the film. The clip features Rapp discussing her work penning the movie’s opening song “What Ifs”, a perfect complement to Screen Rant’s Tiny Fey interview in which Fey touches on the decision to change the movie’s opening song from its Broadway roots. The featurette is just one of many pieces of bonus content that come with a purchase of the digital release.

How Mean Girls Combines Both Sides of Reneé Rapp’s Career

Tiny Fey praised Reneé Rapp’s Regina George thanks to the actor’s ability to bring multiple sides of the character to life, but Rapp’s work in Mean Girls also fully utilizes her pop prowess. This is evident in “What Ifs” itself, in which Rapp’s pop melodies seamlessly carry Broadway-style lyrics that launch Cady’s journey in the movie. Rapp is one of the most exciting up-and-coming pop artists of the day, and the fact that she co-wrote Mean Girls’ opening song sets her apart from many of even the most experienced Broadway actors. It also ties back to her own time in the Broadway cast of the musical, even while embracing her current pop sucess.

“What Ifs” is just one of the ways in which Rapp’s pop side plays into the movie. Her song “Not My Fault” with Megan Thee Stallion is also featured on the Mean Girls soundtrack and plays over the end credits. Along with the above featurette for “What Ifs”, the bonus content on the Mean Girls digital release also features the music video for “Not My Fault” as well as other dives into the music, characters, and choreography of the movie that continue to highlight the work of Rapp and the rest of cast and creatives.
