Remake Makes It Easier To Find TLOU’s Walking Dead Easter Egg

Naughty Dog’s upcoming The Last of Us Part I has made it easier for players to discover a well-known Walking Dead Easter egg. Easter eggs are a common feature in video games, and developers have slipped all sorts of little secrets into their games in the past. Sometimes the Easter eggs reference a video game that the developer or publisher also worked on previously, but other times, the reference could just be a nod to something that inspired the developers as they were working on the game.Players love to discover Easter eggs, and some are so well-hidden that they’re not even found until years later. For example, one speedrunner discovered a Cordyceps Easter egg in The Last of Us over seven years after the game’s initial release. Another The Last of Us Easter egg that fans have discovered is a recreation of Clementine’s house from The Walking Dead. If the player walks to the school in Bill’s town, they will pass this house. Though it is not an exact recreation, the features of the house are strikingly similar to Clementine’s house; there is a pool, a tree house, and even the exterior of the house is similar. It’s now been confirmed that this specific Easter egg will still be in the game’s PS5 remake.Related: Everything New In The Last Of Us Part 1 RemakePopular streamer DomTheBomb tweeted a screenshot of the Walking Dead Easter egg in The Last of Us Part I. Like the wide variety of new cosmetic skins in The Last of Us Part I, this seemingly average house pays homage to an unrelated intellectual property’s universe. Clementine’s house looks essentially the same, but there is a significant overgrowth of vines swallowing the house. Even more notable is the remarkable difference in graphical quality. The water’s reflection in the near-empty pool is crisp, and the texture of the overgrowth’s leaves make the scene look more realistic.

The Redesign of the Walking Dead Easter Egg May Point to Improved Exploration

Though the original game was lauded for its story and graphics at the time of its release, it was limited in its opportunities for exploration. Gameplay features from The Last of Us Part II can improve upon the original’s by expanding the level design. Newer consoles can handle more game data, and players will certainly welcome new spaces to explore as they take a break from the intense combat. With the enhanced capabilities of the PlayStation 5, it remains to be seen how much The Last Of Us Part I has been expanded. New easter eggs might have even been added.

When the original TLOU game was released in 2013, The Walking Dead series was at the height of its popularity. It’s nice to see that the developers of The Last of Us Part I at Naughty Dog decided to keep the reference to such a cultural icon in their remake. The extent to which this Easter egg indicates enhanced exploration in the rest of the game will be revealed when The Last Of Us Part I finally launches.
