Reese Witherspoon Reveals The Draw Of Where The Crawdads Sing In New Clip

A new behind-the-scenes clip from Where The Crawdads Sing has surfaced, featuring Executive Producer Reese Witherspoon. With a new trailer landing tomorrow, fans of Delia Owens’ 2018 novel are growing more curious to see how the story was adapted for the big screen, especially since the film rights were secured just a few months after the book was first published. Given that Witherspoon chose it for her book club before tackling the film adaptation, her passion for the project has always been clear, but this is her first time speaking about the movie on-camera.

Where The Crawdads Sing was written by Beasts of the Southern Wild scribe Lucy Alibar and directed by Olivia Newman (Chicago Fire), whom Screen Rant had the pleasure of interviewing recently. The film stars Daisy Edgar-Jones (Under the Banner of Heaven) as a young woman named Kya Clark who becomes the key suspect in a murder. Living in a rundown shack on the outskirts of a small town, Kya was left to raise herself after being abandoned by her family. The original novel first explores Kya’s difficult youth of learning to survive on her own before diving into her adulthood as she’s accused of murdering an ex-boyfriend.

In the promotional vignette for Where The Crawdads Sing released by Sony Pictures Entertainment, Witherspoon describes how much she loved the novel and how long she’s been longing to turn it into a movie. Interspersed with snippets of the film itself, which arrives exclusively in theaters on July 15, Taylor Swift’s upcoming song “Carolina” can be heard setting the scene for the story. Though Where The Crawdads Sing takes place in North Carolina, filming took place in Louisiana, where the cast and crew has to contend with several setbacks over the course of four months. Between COVID shutdowns and severe weather alerts due to lightening storms, torrential rain, and intense summer heat, the journey of making the highly anticipated film was a difficult yet rewarding one indeed. Based on the trailer and first-look images that have already been released, the movie will be a visual delight.

Reese Witherspoon herself is no stranger to producing high caliber projects, having already served as executive producer on several highly-acclaimed series she herself starred in, including The Morning Show, Little Fires Everywhere and Big Little Lies. She has also produced films as diverse in tone as PenelopeLegally Blonde 2 (and the upcoming threequel) and Gone Girl. Fans of the book can rest assured that the story is in safe hands with an artist as passionate about it as they are.

Where The Crawdads Sing arrives in theaters on July 15.
