Red Oaks Season 4: Will The Steven Soderbergh Comedy Return?

Red Oaks Season 4: Will The Steven Soderbergh Comedy Return?

Will comedy series Red Oaks return for another series? The last decade has seen a marked increase in shows set during the 1980s and bathing in the warm nostalgia of the decade. Stranger Things is probably the most famous example, with Netflix’s breakout hit feeling like a mashup of Stephen King’s novels and monster movies like Aliens. Other shows set in the decade include The Goldbergs and GLOW.

Red Oaks joined that list in 2015, with the Amazon Prime comedy-drama following David (Craig Roberts), a student who takes a job at the titular country club. The show was co-created by Joe Gangemi and Gregory Jacobs (Magic Mike XXL) – and was based on the latter’s real-life experiences growing up – with Steven Soderbergh acting as producer. The series may not have become a huge success but it received great reviews for its ensemble – with the Red Oaks cast including Jennifer Grey, Allison Lanier, Josh Meyers and Paul Reiser – and deftly balancing lighthearted comedy with some genuine emotion too.

The last season arrived on Prime in 2017, but is there any hope for Red Oaks season 4?

Red Oaks Season 3 Was Intended As The Finale

Red Oaks season 3 was given a shorter episode order and was intended to give the series closure. To that end, “Action!” gave every main character a fitting closing arc, with each taking little steps forward in their lives. It also saw David making his directorial debut directing a dog food commercial, with the final scene ending on a very fitting last line.

The show ended with David taking steps into adulthood and a career he’s passionate about, but the third season’s ending doesn’t completely rule out Red Oaks season 4. In a Decider interview, both Craig Roberts and Paul Reiser both stating they’d be happy to do more, with the latter in particular wishing season 3 had been ten episodes.

Red Oaks Season 4 Probably Won’t Happen

The third series did a sweet job of wrapping up the story, and fans were probably lucky Amazon (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) decided to greenlight a shorter final season instead of just canceling it. This means Red Oaks season 4 is doubtful, and in the years since it ended, there have been no signs of movement on another series. Red Oaks stopped with something of a perfect ending, so maybe it’s best to leave it as a cult TV show ripe for rediscovery in the years ahead.
