Red Notice 2 & 3 Officially Happening, Reynolds, Johnson & Gadot Expected To Return

Netflix is officially moving forward with Red Notice 2 and 3 with Ryan Reynolds, Dwayne Johnson and Gal Gadot all expected to return. Johnson and Reynolds star in the film as FBI agent John Hartley and renowned art thief Nolan Booth as they reluctantly team up to pursue Gadot’s fellow notorious thief Sarah Black, better known as The Bishop, before she can successfully acquire all three of the priceless Cleopatra eggs. The A-list trio are joined in Red Notice by Chris Diamantopoulos, Ritu Arya, Ivan Mbakop, Vincenzo Amato and Rafael Petardi.

Red Notice hails from writer/director/producer Rawson Marshall Thurber, with the action comedy marking his third collaboration with star and producer Johnson after the well-received buddy action comedy Central Intelligence and the modest box office action hit Skyscraper. Development on the film originally began at Universal Pictures and Legendary Entertainment, though Netflix would later acquire the rights and put a whopping $200-250 million into the film’s budget, making it their most costly project to date. Though Red Notice hasn’t been a critical hit for Netflix, it doesn’t appear the potential new IP is going away any time soon.

A few months after hitting the streaming platform, Deadline has brought word that Netflix is moving forward on a Red Notice 2 and 3. The streamer is reportedly in the early stages of development on the new franchise, with Rawson Marshall Thurber currently penning the scripts and Reynolds, Johnson and Gadot all expected to return for the sequels. Sources also report that Netflix is looking to shoot Red Notice 2 and 3 back-to-back sometime in early 2023, depending on setting deals and schedules with their A-list stars.

It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to see Netflix moving forward with both a Red Notice 2 and 3 given the mammoth success the first film brought to the streaming platform upon its debut. Given the film’s mammoth production budget, it needed to bring in more than 70 million viewers in its first 28 days in order to draw some kind of profit and went on to exceed this level by a landslide in record time, having brought in over 364 million hours of viewership in that time. Sequel talks for Red Notice had been underway since 2020 when word began circulating that Netflix was hoping to build plans off of it while producer Hiram Garcia confirmed last year that tentative plans were in place should the film become a hit.

Thurber similarly confirmed said plans for Red Notice 2 and 3 shortly after the film’s release, namely the potential for a back-to-back production schedule for the sequels. Should the streaming service and the creatives behind the title come to a deal for the films, it would mark one of the first back-to-back movie productions to get underway since the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic threw Hollywood shoots into turmoil, with plans for Mission: Impossible 7 and 8 being separated as well as John Wick: Chapter 4 and 5. In the meantime, audiences can revisit or catch the first Red Notice on Netflix now.
