Almost all the Bat-Family members have found their place in the greater DC world, but Red Hood has always struggled to find where he belongs. Jason Todd has tried being a villain, an anti-hero, and a team leader, all with mixed success. Now, DC has finally decided to give Jason a shot at finding his niche as DC’s newest hunter of the supernatural.
Red Hood has been through a lot in the past year and has been struggling to find his place in the world for even longer. Now, DC is setting up Jason Todd as the protector of the Hill – a dangerous area of Gotham where he’ll gather his own supporting cast and villains, striking out as more than the Bat-Family’s black sheep. However, he won’t just be fighting crime and supervillains, but literal demons.

All hell comes to the Hill…literally! Jason Todd has gone up against his fair share of monsters and paranormal creatures in his time, but he’s never gone up against anything quite like the demonic creatures that have been unleashed in the streets of his new hometown. Literal monsters roam the city, metaphorical monsters pull the strings in the shadows, and they all have Red Hood in their sights! |
Since his return, there’s a degree to which Red Hood has been Nightwing with a bad attitude – a grown-up Robin who no longer wants to play by Batman’s rules, but who stops short of doing anything Bruce won’t eventually be able to forgive. While DC has tried many different things to give Jason Todd his own identity as more than the Bat-Family’s shameful failure, but turning him into a demon hunter is something truly new and the publisher’s best chance yet at setting him apart.
2023 Challenged Red Hood More Than Ever Before – Including His Resurrection
Red Hood has been through a lot in his life, but 2023 challenged and changed the character unlike ever before, setting him up for a new solo series.
Jason Todd Will Be Going Up Against Literal Demons
Red Hood Is No Stranger To Fighting The Supernatural
Jason has bounced around the DC Universe a lot ever since his resurrection. Decades after Jason Todd was killed by the Joker, he came back as a brutal killer and was firmly a villain for the Bat-Family. After the New 52 reboot, this was changed and Jason became much more of an anti-hero. Despite this change and becoming much more friendly with the Bat-Family, Jason still struggled to find his place in the DC Universe. DC tried to push him as the leader of the Outsiders and the founder of its “Dark Trinity,” but this eventually fell through as well.
Jason is now being taken in a new direction yet again, but it’s one that suits him far better. Out of all the members of the Bat-Family, Jason has always had the strongest connection to the supernatural. He was brought back to life due to mysticism, has trained with several mystic groups, and can even wield the magical All-Blade. Jason even carries custom bullets for taking down vampires and demons. This background makes him a far better candidate to hunt monsters in the night than anyone else in Batman’s notoriously magic-averse family. Making Jason the go-to hero for the supernatural in Gotham can set him apart as a unique hero to the city.
Jason has sworn off killing again and again, but it never takes, creating a constant fluctuation in his relationship with Gotham’s heroes. However, up against demons and the undead, Red Hood can cut loose without every gunshot summon Batman to deal out a beating and a lecture. DC is making a truly smart choice by reinventing Red Hood as a demon hunter – one that allows him to play to all his strengths without forcing him into the same cycle of drama fans have seen a dozen times before.
Red Hood: The Hill #3 is on sale on April 9 from DC Comics!
