Rockstar Games is sitting pretty as Red Dead Redemption 2 has sold over 17 million copies since its October 26 release date. With Red Dead Redemption 2 being the long-awaited prequel to 2010’s critically acclaimed Red Dead Redemption, Rockstar already had high hopes for the title to perform.
Heading back to the dusty plains of the Old West with some new outlaws in town, Red Dead Redemption 2 focuses on Arthur Morgan as he charts the dangers of the Dutch van der Linde gang in its early days. An open-world game like players have never seen before, it seems like the controversy surrounding Rockstar developers working 100-hour weeks has paid off.

According to a financial release from Take-Two Interactive, Red Dead Redemption 2 shifted a colossal 17 million copies in its first eight days. To put this into context, it means the latest game sold more copies in eight days than Red Dead Redemption has done in the past eight years. Take-Two Interactive clearly had a plan for where Red Dead Redemption 2 goes next, and it looks like the only way is up.
While Red Dead Redemption 2 is still a long way off Grand Theft Auto V‘s eye-watering sales of 100 million copies, both games are tied as the highest rated PlayStation 4 and Xbox One titles with a Metacritic score of 97. Red Dead Redemption 2 is off to a flying start, but it remains to be seen whether anything will be able to topple GTA V as the most profitable entertainment product of all time.
Red Dead Redemption 2 has premiered to rave reviews and some critics are already calling it game of the decade. Elsewhere, the wild Western beat Grand Theft Auto V to have a record-breaking opening weekend and has reportedly earned $725 million in its first three days. Red Dead Redemption 2 is performing so well, Take-Two is raising its financial outlook for fiscal 2019. Considering the game has already sold more than a lot of titles sell in their entire lifetime, Rockstar and Take-Two are clearly pleased with the results.
Despite the odd glitch of combusting horses and allowing players to duplicate gold bars, Red Dead Redemption 2 is about as polished as a modern game can be. It’s also important to remember that the success at the start of the game is only set to get bigger with the upcoming Red Dead Redemption 2 Online and rumors of an eventual PC release. What the future holds for Red Dead Redemption 2 remains to be seen, but rest assured there are still plenty of bullets in the revolver.
