Red Dead Redemption 2 Modder Releases 4K/60 FPS PS4 Pro Patches

Players who own the PlayStation 4 Pro can now play Red Dead Redemption 2 at 60 FPS and in native 4K, thanks to one dedicated modder who has released an unofficial patch that pushes the title beyond the boundaries of the console. A year after its console release, Rockstar Games’ Western prequel to Red Dead Redemption was released on PC and shocked many fans unexpectedly. Though restricted to minimum settings on consoles due to hardware limitations, Red Dead Redemption 2‘s PC version and its gunslinging gameplay can be pushed beyond 60 FPS and enjoyed in sharp, 4K glory.

Similar to other PC and Rockstar titles, Red Dead Redemption 2 hosts a variety of mods that players can download to expand or completely alter multiple aspects of the title. Popular mods include trainers and expansions that unlock a variety of cheat options and additional bonus content, meanwhile, others such as Reshade and ENB offer visual enhancements and improvements to graphically boost Red Dead Redemption 2 beyond its limits. One prime example is the Red Dead Redemption 2 photorealistic reshade, which enhances, colors, shadows, tone maps, and sharpens to achieve a photorealistic gaming experience with 8K resolution and ray tracing exclusive to PC.

As reported by Ben T. on Twitter, modder illusion0001 has managed to push Red Dead Redemption 2 beyond its limits on the PlayStation 4 Pro, allowing the title to smoothly run around 60 frames per second and in native 4K. Ben claims that the unofficial patch unlocks the frame rate for the PlayStation Pro version, but due to the console having a weak CPU the frames hang in the 50s range and can’t keep a steady 60. Additionally, another patch by the modder boosts the resolution beyond 1080p and allows native 4K with the exclusion of blurry textures.

While Red Dead Redemption 2‘s PlayStation 4 version is playable on PlayStation 5, it doesn’t offer a native experience running at 60 frames-per-second that takes advantage of increased performance and visuals. These new fan-made unofficial patches are further evidence that Rockstar could easily release upgraded versions in the future for current-gen users. Similarly, Grand Theft Auto V Expanded & Enhanced releasing in March for current-gen consoles is expected to offer 60 FPS and will feature improved visuals and gameplay, following two generation consoles being limited to 30 FPS.

Although Red Dead Redemption 2 is limited on last-gen consoles due to hardware, it’s exciting to see what modders can achieve and it further gives hope that an official patch may come out in the future. Hopefully, it won’t be too long before 60 frames-per-second and 4K is an official norm on consoles, and modders like illusion0001 who have created patches for multiple titles including Red Dead Redemption 2 are paving the way for that to officially happen.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Google Stadia.
