Red Dead Online Player Could Lose 6,000 Hours Due To Stadia Shutdown

A Red Dead Online player may lose 6,000 of gameplay progress as a result of the upcoming shutdown of Google Stadia. Google’s now short-lived gaming platform was confirmed to be ending in September, a little over four years since its initial unveiling in 2018. Google Stadia will issue refunds after shutting down, which should come as some consolation to players who have invested time and money into the service following its launch. While Stadia was hailed by Google as the next step in gaming, it faced problems from the start. Because Stadia was a cloud-gaming service, an extremely fast and stable Internet connection was necessary, and even then games did not run completely smoothly. The lack of promotion and desirable features especially during a time when many were staying home and had ample opportunity to experiment with Stadia sealed the service’s fate. Most Stadia games and progress will be completely gone and players will be refunded. However, progress made on Ubisoft games on Stadia will transfer to PC, meaning Assassin’s Creed fans won’t suffer as harshly when it comes to lost saves.Related: Google Turned Down Death Stranding Sequel, Report ClaimsUnfortunately, not all games will be transferable, as is the case with Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2. According to PC Gamer, a content creator who goes by the name of Colour may lose almost 6000 hours of progress in RDR2‘s multiplayer mode, Red Dead Online. The avid Red Dead player took to Twitter to voice their complaints, sharing a screenshot of the proof of their 5907 hours of progress and 26 achievements. While single-player progress can be transferred on RDR2, this isn’t necessarily possible for Online, although Colour has asked Rockstar for a one-time character transfer. Rockstar has not responded at the time of writing.

Google Stadia Shutdown Is Another Blow For Red Dead Online Players

Since updates for Red Dead Online have now ended, it’s unknown if Rockstar will allow Colour to save their thousands of hours of progress. The combination of RDO‘s death and Stadia shutting down is an unfortunate combination for players on that platform – particularly if they are unable to carry over the time and investment they have put into another platform. Although not as heavily supported as GTA Online, Red Dead Online still featured premium currency for players to invest in. If RDO‘s Stadia players are unable to retain their progress and purchases, then that could be seen as a frustrating waste of time and money.

Stadia’s failure is disappointing but not entirely unexpected, and the same could also be said regarding the death of Red Dead Online. The former’s technology was never smooth enough for the majority of players, while the latter didn’t see the level of investment it required to compete with GTA Online. In any case, hopefully those players on Google Stadia will be able to retain their progress – especially if thousands of hours of gameplay are a stake.
