Recasting Sasha Calle In The DC Universe: 10 Characters She Could Play

Recasting Sasha Calle In The DC Universe: 10 Characters She Could Play

After a spectacular supporting performance as Kara Zor-El in The Flash, Sasha Calle, unfortunately, will not be reprising her role in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, but there are other characters she could play in the DC Universe. The DCU is only a partial reboot of the DC Extended Universe, with characters like Blue Beetle and Amanda Waller carrying over into the new universe and the TV show Peacemaker receiving another season in the new continuity. While more DCEU characters might carry over into the DCU, Sasha Calle will be replaced by Milly Alcock as Supergirl in Woman of Tomorrow.

Sasha Calle joined the DCEU timeline at a tumultuous time. The Flash was reportedly originally intended to perform continuity maintenance in addition to loosely adapting Flashpoint, replacing Affleck’s Batman with Michael Keaton’s iteration and securing Sasha Calle’s future as Supergirl. When the James Gunn and Peter Safran-led soft reboot was announced, however, this future became far more uncertain, and eventually saw Milly Alcock become the official Supergirl for the new era of the franchise. Despite no longer playing Supergirl, there are 10 DC roles that Sasha Calle could play in the forthcoming DC Universe.

10 Catwoman Could Be A Perfect Hero Or Villain Role

Sasha Calle Can Be The DCU’s Selina Kyle

Selina Kyle, better known as Catwoman, is a markedly different character from Kara Zor-El, serving as an adversary, ally, and love interest to Batman. Most Batman franchises introduce a version of Catwoman sooner or later, and with Andy Muschietti due to introduce the DCU’s Batman and Robin in The Brave and the Bold, Calle could work with the director once again, albeit as an anti-hero. Playing such a different character from Supergirl would demonstrate Sasha Calle’s acting range and Catwoman is a particularly beloved DC Comics character, which could compensate for the missed opportunity to play Supergirl again.

9 Spoiler (Stephanie Brown) Can Extend The Bat Family Further

A Bat Family Role Could Be Perfect For Sasha Calle

Batgirl Stephanie Brown in full costume

The Brave and the Bold will notably include Damian Wayne as Robin. This could imply that the DCU’s Batman has already built the Bat Family over the years, as Damian is the fifth Robin sidekick. His predecessor, Stephanie Brown, was the fourth Robin, the third Batgirl, and, most famously, Spoiler. Stephanie Brown is a compelling member of the Bat Family, initially adopting the Spoiler persona to undermine her father, the supervillain known as Cluemaster. The Spoiler role would be a more heroic alternative to Catwoman for Sasha Calle that would also allow her to work with Andy Muschietti again.

8 Huntress Also Has Solid Batman Ties

Sasha Calle Could Be An Excellent Vengeful Vigilante

Another potential Batman-adjacent role for Sasha Calle could be Helena Bertinelli, also known as The Huntress. Assuming that Mary Elizabeth Winstead – who played Huntress in the DCEU’s Birds of Prey – will not be reprising the role in the DCU, Calle has the acting chops to excellently play the vengeful vigilante. In the comics, Huntress became a vigilante after her parents – who were prominent Gotham mobsters – were killed by a rival crime organization. Huntress lacks a no-kill rule, leading her to clash with the more reserved Batman.

7 Star Sapphire (Carol Ferris) Would Extend DCU’s Lantern Lore

Could Sasha Calle’s Next Role Be In Lanterns?

Another role that Sasha Calle would be excellent for is Carol Ferris, a major character in the Green Lantern mythos. In addition to being a longtime ally and love interest of Hal Jordan’s, Carol Ferris is also a wielder of a Star Sapphire ring, with Ferris – as Star Sapphire – being an ally and enemy of Jordan’s heroic alter ego at various points. With Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and the greater Green Lantern mythos receiving their DCU debuts in the forthcoming TV series Lanterns, Carol Ferris has the perfect opportunity to appear as well, with Calle portraying the classic character.

6 Miss Martian Is A Complicated Hero Worth Adding Depth To

Sasha Calle Could Play Another Alien Superhero

Miss Martian smiling and playing with her hair in the comics

In DC’s comics, Miss Martian was brought into the post-Crisis Teen Titans roster when Supergirl was unavailable. The character was further popularized in the Young Justice animated series, which features Miss Martian as a protagonist in the show’s ever-rotating ensemble cast. Unlike Martian Manhunter, Miss Martian is a White Martian, though her abilities are nearly identical and extremely powerful. If the DCU introduces an iteration of Miss Martian that draws inspiration from Young Justice, Sasha Calle would be an excellent choice for the role, which requires excellent range, as Miss Martian hides a serious and lonely side behind cheeriness.

5 Raven’s Narrative Arc Mirrors Calle’s Supergirl

Sasha Calle Has The Skill For This Complex Role

The iconic Teen Titans member Raven would be another great choice for Sasha Calle. The half-demon heroine struggles to keep her dark powers in check and protect the world, despite the apocalyptic machinations of her father, Trigon. While no Teen Titans projects have been announced for the DCU yet, Sasha Calle would do well in the role of Raven, if her performance as Supergirl in The Flash is any indication, as Raven’s loneliness and internal struggle is similar in some ways to the DCEU’s Flashpoint-universe Kara Zor-El.

4 Faora Would Let Sasha Calle Flip The DCEU Script In The DCU

A Villainous New Role For Sasha Calle?

Faora in full armor in Man of Steel

If the DCU’s Superman franchise introduces a new iteration of Faora, having Sasha Calle play the villainous Kryptonian would be rather self-referential (considering that Faora killed Calle’s Supergirl in one timeline in The Flash) but nevertheless fitting. Before Superman II popularized General Zod, Faora was the more prominent Kryptonian enemy of Superman. To differentiate itself from the DCEU and Richard Donner Superman franchises, the DCU could similarly position Faora as the main Kryptonian criminal to challenge Superman, giving Sasha Calle a role that is simultaneously similar and entirely different from the DCEU’s Supergirl.

3 Green Lantern (Jessica Cruz) Would Help Flesh Out The DCU’s Lantern Roster

Sasha Calle Would Be Perfect For This Major Hero With A Dark Origin

Jessica Cruz, DC Green Lantern whose mask is made out of energy from her power ring

While only Hal Jordan and John Stewart have been confirmed to appear in Lanterns thus far, the DCU will include another Green Lantern, Guy Gardner, in Superman: Legacy. The DCU could introduce even more human Green Lanterns in its forthcoming properties, with Jessica Cruz being one such potential character. Cruz is a complex heroine with a tragic origin, losing her friends to mobsters after witnessing them burying a body, leaving her with lasting trauma. Sasha Calle would be a perfect fit for this complex and tragic heroine who overcomes her past trauma to rise to the occasion.

2 Power Girl Is The Perfect Way To Play On Sasha Calle’s Supergirl Past

The DCU Can Have Two Supergirls This Way

Of course, the DCU can have its cake and eat it too if it casts Sasha Calle as its iteration of Power Girl. In the comics, Power Girl is another reality’s iteration of Supergirl, with the Kryptonian name of Kara Zor-L and the human name of Karen Starr. If Sasha Calle were to play Power Girl in the DCU, she could come from an unseen alternate reality or come from the DCEU itself, adopting the Power Girl moniker upon discovering that her new reality already has a Supergirl via Milly Alcock’s iteration.

1 Donna Troy Is A Major DC Character With Real DCU Potential

Sasha Calle Can Be Wonder Woman’s Protégé

Sasha Calle has noted that Gal Gadot was a major source of inspiration, though her Supergirl, unfortunately, never met Gadot’s Wonder Woman. With Gadot’s Wonder Woman potentially carrying over into the DCU (though there have been conflicting reports on the matter in 2023), there is a perfect opportunity to have the two actresses share a scene. Donna Troy of Teen Titans fame could join the DCU in a future property, a role that would be a perfect fit for Sasha Calle. While Calle hoped to star as Kara Zor-El in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Donna Troy would be a more than suitable substitute.
