Rebel Moon’s Netflix Debut Beat Zack Snyder’s Last Movie According To New Streaming Data

New streaming data has revealed that the 2023 debut of Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire beat his previous Netflix effort, Army of the Dead. Following his tumultuous tenure as the early architect of the DC Extended Universe, Snyder would eventually forge a fruitful creative partnership with Netflix off the back of his 2021 zombie movie. Not only would Netflix continue to expand the Army of the Dead franchise with a prequel, but the streamer would also become the home for his expansive sci-fi epic that once began life as a Star Wars pitch.

According to the most recent Nielsen ratings shared by The Hollywood Reporter, Rebel Moon was the second-most watched streaming movie for the week of December 18 to December 24, with an impressive 966 million viewership minutes. Despite making its streaming debut on December 22 and only being available for a portion of the reported period, this number tops the 913 million minutes enjoyed by Army of the Dead in its first week on the platform. Another Netflix original, Leave the World Behind remained in the top slot at 983 million minutes, despite losing approximately 50% of its viewership numbers from the previous week.

Netflix Still Seems Happy Being In The Zack Snyder Business

Despite being lambasted by critics, the initial viewership numbers for Snyder’s first Rebel Moon movie would suggest there is still a considerable divide between professional critics and wider audiences. No stranger to attracting less than favorable critical responses to his work, the director’s movies continue to benefit from the presence of a vocal and highly passionate fanbase whose online fervor is matched by few other groups in the modern pop culture landscape.

The World Of Rebel Moon Explained (Including All Terminology)

Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon creates an entirely new sci-fi universe full of new cultures and technology with some unfamiliar terminology.

These latest numbers, while still less than those enjoyed by the other Netflix blockbuster, Leave the World Behind, would suggest that Netflix is still reaping the benefits from its continued association with Snyder and the support of his unique approach to filmmaking. The streamer would further cement their relationship with the filmmaker by recently making him the first director to be given their own profile icon on the platform.

While Snyder is currently busy planning the release of his extended cut of Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire and its second chapter, Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver, he also has many more Netflix projects planned in the years to come. With Army of the Dead set to get its own direct follow-up and Snyder also helming the upcoming Netflix anime series Twilight of the Gods, Netflix does not look as though it will be parting ways with the director anytime soon.
