Rebel Moon’s Big Betrayal Twist Explained By Zack Snyder

Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire!

Rebel Moon director Zack Snyder has explained the betrayal twist that happens during Part One: A Child of Fire, revealing the character’s motivation. One of the first people Kora and Gunnar meet on their journey is Kai, a mercenary who shows them where to find warriors willing to join in the fight to defend Veldt. However, it’s revealed in the film’s climax that he gathered everyone so he could give them to the Imperium, all for the sake of a payout.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Snyder reveals why the bounty hunter betrayed the group by the end of Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire. The director said Kai has his own agenda as a truly independent mercenary, subverting expectations that he would fall into the archetype of a thief with a heart of gold. Check out what Snyder had to say below:

He’s not the bounty hunter with the heart of gold. He’s a true rogue,” Snyder tells EW. “To put your faith in some guy you met in a bar is slightly naive. And that’s the fun of the subversive quality to [Rebel Moon’s] sci-fi roots. It does debunk, or at least play with, what you expect to happen.
