“Jonna and the Unpossible Monsters follows super-strong Jonna and her older sister, Rainbow, on their quest to find their father after giant monsters have appeared out of nowhere and destroyed their village,” Laura Samnee said about the Oni Press series. “It’s a tale of sisters, survival, and some monster punching! But this is also a really personal story for both of us because Jonna and Rainbow were inspired by our oldest two daughters, their personalities and our family dynamics.

Check out the synopsis for the series:

With the fate of their family and possibly the whole world at stake, can Jonna and Rainbow rescue their dad, battle countless monsters, and tell each other how they really feel?

Jonna and Rainbow are sisters, but that doesn’t mean they’re all that similar: Rainbow’s the bookish one, Jonna is the whirlwind. Jonna’s also incredibly strong and nearly invulnerable – which will come in handy as they search the ruined, monster-infested wasteland that was once their home while looking for their missing father. Their world, once lush and bountiful, has been overrun by giant monsters and prickly, unnatural vines that strangle the life form the natural flora and fauna.

Jonna and the Unpossible Monsters is a New Story with an Old-School Feel

Chris Samnee added:

As you can imagine, the punching parts were the most fun to draw. I’ve always doodled monsters and creatures, but never really had a chance to flex those muscles in any of the comics I have drawn. With Jonna and the Unpossible Monsters, I get to tap into some of the excitement I had watching old monster movies as a kid, flicks like Gamera and Godzilla and tokusatsu shows like Ultraman. I always wanted to see a tiny, human-sized character take on a giant monster! But there’s also a good deal of ’60s-era Hanna-Barbera in Jonna and the Unpossible Monsters, too, and readers can probably see the influence of shows like Space Ghost and Dino Boy, the Herculoids. Those Alex Toth designs specifically still really sing to me. We wanted this book to pay tribute to those influences, while creating something new and fun.

The “old-school” influences mentioned by Samnee are very noticeable within the first issue – as well as throughout the series. From the scope of the monsters relative to Jonna’s youthful stature to the vibrant color palette, there is a lot to love about this classically-influenced comic series. Jonna and the Unpossible Monsters Deluxe Edition from Oni Press will be available October 31.
