Reacher Interview: Alan Ritchson On Season 2’s Changes & His Dream Fight Scene

Jack Reacher returns in Season 2 of the hit Prime Video series, Reacher. Alan Ritchson stars as the title character (previously played by Tom Cruise in a pair of films released in 2012 and 2016), a barrel-chested hunk of muscle who lives life on the outskirts of society, drifting from town to town. Inevitably, trouble always comes his way, leading to conflict that’s inevitably resolved with Reacher’s unique brand of righteous vigilante justice.

The new season of the series, based on the novel Bad Luck and Trouble by Lee Child, sees Reacher come up against a new threat when members of his former team, the 110th MP Special Investigations Unit, are murdered under mysterious circumstances. He teams up with the surviving members to turn the tables on their pursuers, turning the hunters into the hunted.

While promoting the release of Reacher Season 2, airing now on Amazon Prime Video, Ritchson was interviewed by Screen Rant about his work on the series, which is currently shooting its third season. He talks about returning to the iconic role of Jack Reacher after the end of the recent actors’ strike, adjusting to the new team dynamic of the show, and shares his wishes regarding potential fights and stunts that could potentially occur in the series’ future.

Alan Ritchson on reprising his role as Jack Reacher and currently shooting Season 3.

Reacher Interview: Alan Ritchson On Season 2’s Changes & His Dream Fight Scene

Screen Rant: Hello there, Alan Ritchson!

Alan Ritchson: How ya doin’? Nice to talk to you!

Screen Rant: I’m doing great, especially because I get to talk to you after watching season 2 of Reacher the other night!

Alan Ritchson: What did you think? Be honest! You don’t have to tell me you liked it because I’m here!

Screen Rant: Oh my gosh, fantastic! You don’t need me to tell you that I liked it, because you know how good it is!

Alan Ritchson: Okay, I’m glad to hear that!

Screen Rant: One of the big differences this season is that you’ve got your squad. You’ve got the 110th backing you up. Is it a relief or a challenge for you to have these characters whom Reacher sees as equals, or at least has respect for?

Alan Ritchson: I think it’s a huge relief! I think, anytime… Reacher handpicked these individuals. They’re the best of the best, and they’re unique in a way that other people would miss. Reacher sees something special in them. The fact that he can be surrounded by people he fully trusts is great, and who wouldn’t want that in life, you know? To know that some of the best of the best have our back, that’s a great feeling.

Screen Rant: By this point, how comfortable are you in Reacher’s skin? How has your approach and your relationship with the character evolved from Season 1, and now going into Season 3?

Alan Ritchson: It’s gotten much easier to slip into character. I still wonder to myself, out loud… We just had this long strike, and coming out of the strike, I was like, “How do I, what do I do, how do I do Reacher? What do I do?” And then I get on set and instantly, I’m like, “Oh, no, I know exactly what I need to do.” It’s always there and I can slip into it. I’ve gotten better about that over the years. It gets easier, but I don’t ever want to get so comfortable that I don’t listen to direction, can’t take suggestions. I’ve got a team that really understands us well. Sam Hill is a producing director that we’ve had for a long time, and I think he probably gets the character better than I do.

There’s still times, even in Season 3, where I’ll make a choice and then he’ll come out and go, “What if it’s more… this, for Reacher.” Of course! It’s not the obvious choice, but it’s the right choice, so I’ll take it in a different direction. Just having guys like that behind me makes it easier, so I can trust settling into it, but then know that maybe it’s not always what I expect.

Screen Rant: You’re obviously a big guy, I’m not going to ask you about that, you’ve probably been through enough of that! But Reacher takes advantage of your gifts and abilities when it comes to kicking ass. Is there any particular type of fight or stunt that’s on your bucket list that you want to do that you haven’t gotten the chance to do yet?

Alan Ritchson: Oh, dude. Yeah. Well, some good motorcycle stunts, I would love. I like to ride. I’d also like to do, like, aerial fights. Like, aerial skydiving fights. That would be the icing on the cake for me.

Screen Rant: A 20,000 foot piledriver…

Alan Ritchson: A 20,000 foot! (Laughs) Exactly! Just don’t be the guy who lands on the bottom, and you live!
