Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Confirmed As PS5 Exclusive, Not Coming To PS4

Insomniac Games has confirmed that Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart will remain a PlayStation 5 exclusive and won’t be coming to PS4. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart was revealed back in June as one of the first major titles for the PS5.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is a third-person action game that uses a dimension-hopping and time travel storyline. The game has some of the most impressive uses of the PS5’s internal SSD, as there is practically no loading between scenes. This means the cast can journey to drastically different areas within moments. It’s not an exaggeration to say that Rift Apart could be the most impressive PS5 game at launch, as it demonstrates the incredible potential of the hardware in a way that no other title in the launch lineup seems to match.

Fans could been wondering whether Rift Apart might also be ported to the PS4, both in fear that this could mean it’s actually not taking full advantage of the PS5 and in hope that current-gen players could get a shot to play it. This is because Sackboy, Miles Morales, and Horizon Forbidden West are now cross-gen games. A fan asked the official Insomniac Games Twitter account whether Rift Apart would also be coming to PS4 in the future. The account confirmed that Rift Apart will remain a PS5 exclusive.

It’s unlikely that the PS4 could run Rift Apart, based on the gameplay footage of Ratchet & Clank that has been released so far. The fast loading of the PS5 is required to make the game run as smoothly as it does. The stages that were shown in the trailers would constantly be grinding to a halt on current-gen hardware. The entire gimmick of the game is based around PS5 hardware, and it wouldn’t be easy to adapt or drop it for a PS4 port.

The PS5 has almost no launch exclusives, now that Destruction AllStars has been pushed back to 2021. The PS5 could still have a killer holiday 202o title if Rift Apart is released before the end of the year. As it stands, players still don’t know the exact release date for Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart outside of the PS5’s launch window, and fans are expecting a delay, considering the PS5 is now less than two weeks from hitting store shelves. The PS4 owners of the world aren’t missing out if they didn’t nab a PS5 pre-order (and that’s most of them), as most of the biggest launch games are cross-gen, but the Ratchet & Clank fans will need to upgrade if they want to experience the next entry in the series.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is due to be released during the PS5’s launch window.
