Ratchet & Clank Developer Is Using Dreams To Make New Series Experience

A new Ratchet & Clank game has been created by an Insomniac Games designer, although it will only be available in the PlayStation 4 game Dreams. The series is one of Sony’s biggest first-party properties and has proven to be a great success for the company, with more than a dozen games and spin-offs released. There has even been a movie adaptation of the series, which released in 2016.

The Ratchet & Clank series has been largely dormant in recent times. While there was a remake of the original title in 2016, there have been no new installments since the 2013 title Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus. That means fans have had to wait more than seven years for a proper sequel. Although this new announcement might not be exactly what fans want, they won’t have to wait long for a proper return to the franchise. Sony announced Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart at the PlayStation 5 reveal event back in June, showing off footage of the game for the first time.

Media Molecule, the developer behind the game creation system Dreams on PlayStation 4, has revealed that a new Ratchet & Clank game is on the way. The only downside for fans of the series is that this is not a fully-fledged sequel. Instead, the experience has been created in Dreams by Josh Leman. The designer works at Insomniac Games and was part of the studio’s team that helped create both Marvel’s Spider-Man and the PS4 remaster of Ratchet & Clank in 2016. The new Ratchet & Clank game has been built using community assets available to all players, so will help to demonstrate what is possible in Dreams. A full look at Leman’s efforts can be seen in the livestream below:

Although there was plenty of skepticism about Dreams before its release at the start of 2020, the title has ended up being quite popular. The game creation platform comes with a wide array of in-built titles but is best known for the range of community games that players have created themselves. Dreams is essentially a simplified development tool that allows users to create their own games, with support for music, multiplayer, and online functions included.

Despite the fact that this new Ratchet & Clank game is not a full and proper sequel, it will no doubt satisfy some fans as they wait for the release of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. With no official release date yet announced for the sequel, it could be some time before players get a chance to try it out for the first time. From the brief glimpse of the Dreams creation shown in the stream, it looks as if Leman has captured the essence of the franchise, making it worth playing.
