Puss In Boots: Last Wish Star Addresses Shrek 5 Return Possibility

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish voice actor Harvey Guillén addresses his possible return in Shrek 5. Serving as a sequel to the 2011 film, The Last Wish hit theaters in 2022, featuring the return of Antonio Banderas’ Puss, who was first introduced in Shrek 2. Guillén joined the cast of the film as Perrito, a small dog who eventually becomes Puss’ friend and ally. The film was a success boith critically and commercially, and it’s since been revealed that Shrek 5 is in development, opening the door to a host of exciting character returns.

As audiences await news on Shrek 5, Guillén tells ComicBook.com that he thinks that Perrito could make a strong addition to the film since there’s so much left to explore with the character. While the actor doesn’t know anything about the upcoming sequel, he’s definitely open to reprising his role. Check out his full comment below when asked about a Shrek 5 return:

“Oh, absolutely. 100%. I mean, I think we want to hear, I want to hear Perrito’s origin story. When did that whole thing happen with the sock? I want to know a little bit of a backstory there and what happened, and how he got that scar on his tummy. I still don’t know how he got that. If you look at the poster he’s lifting up his sweater, he has a little scar on his tummy, and I was like, how did you get that?”

What To Expect From Shrek 5

When Could The Sequel Release?

Puss In Boots: Last Wish Star Addresses Shrek 5 Return Possibility

Although Shrek 5 has yet to be officially confirmed and given a release date, Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri revealed in spring 2023 that his company and creative partner DreamWorks Animation were keen on bringing the popular animated franchise back to the big screen. To this end, Meledandri said that talks were underway with original Shrek cast members Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz, though no real announcements about the film have been shared since.

If Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona all return, it’s fair to assume that Banderas will also be reprising his role as Puss, who is now a staple character of the franchise. Whether Perrito will also return isn’t clear, but it will likely depend on what kind of story the fifth film aims to tell. The ending of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, however, does tease that a grand reunion is on the horizon, with Puss, Perrito, and Kitty (Salma Hayek) all setting off for the Kingdom of Far Far Away with the promise of reuniting with “some old friends“.

Beyond that, not much is known about Shrek 5, but considering it’s now been almost a year since Meledandri’s comments, it’s possible that more progress has been made behind the scenes that just hasn’t been shared yet. As far as a potential release date, the film could hit theaters in 2025, but it could also be 2026 depending on how development is progressing. Clearly, however, if Shrek 5 does happen, Guillén is hoping that there’s a place for Perrito.
