Puss In Boots 2’s Trailer Is A Great Sign For Shrek 5

The latest trailer for Puss in Boots: The Last Wish has been released, and one part of it is a great sign that Shrek 5 might be released soon. Shrek 5 was announced to be in development in 2016, but there’s been very little news about its development since then. The movie was originally planned to be released in 2020 at the latest (via CinemaBlend), so it’s clear that it’s been delayed for one reason or another, but it’s odd that there haven’t been any official announcements.

There’s no way of knowing when Shrek 5 will finally be released, but the latest trailer for Puss in Boots: The Last Wish suggests that it might happen soon. The latest trailer for The Last Wish featured “All Star”, the iconic theme of the first Shrek movie and DreamWorks’ Shrek franchise, as a whole. If The Last Wish is trying to invoke that sort of nostalgia for Shrek, then that could mean that DreamWorks will finally be releasing Shrek 5 sometime soon, and The Last Wish could even be used to properly bring the Shrek franchise back into focus.

Why Has Shrek 5 Been Taking So Long?

Puss In Boots 2’s Trailer Is A Great Sign For Shrek 5

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is a great sign for Shrek 5’s potential release, but that still begs the question of why the movie has been taking so long. As of right now, there isn’t any information about its delay, but since the original announcement came shortly after NBCUniversal purchased DreamWorks Animation, it could be that the restructuring that went along with that caused it to be delayed. At the very least, with DreamWorks’ Kung Fu Panda 4 and a new The Boss Baby movie in development, it’s clear that DreamWorks still intends on continuing established franchises, so the same should be the case for Shrek.

How Puss In Boots 2 Could Lead Back To Shrek

Shrek and Donkey meet Puss for the first time in Shrek 2

Shrek 5 is going to be released at some point, and it wouldn’t be impossible for Puss in Boots: The Last Wish to bring things back to the Shrek franchise. Since the Puss in Boots movies are supposed to be prequels to Shrek, the events of The Last Wish could lead to Puss becoming an ogre killer as he originally was in Shrek 2, and the movie could even recreate his introduction in Shrek 2 from his perspective. Something like that would be a great way to bridge Puss in Boots with Shrek, and it would do an excellent job of reminding people about the characters in preparation for Shrek 5.

It’s unclear why DreamWorks’ Shrek 5 has been taking so long, but with Puss in Boots: The Last Wish invoking Shrek nostalgia through “All Star”, it might be set for a release soon. Naturally, one specific reference isn’t automatically indicative of anything, so Shrek 5 could still take a while to be released. Even so, it’s a very big Shrek reference to be making, and with how easy it would be for Puss in Boots: The Last Wish to connect to Shrek, it gives plenty of credence to the idea of Shrek 5 finally being on the verge of release.
