A pulpy action graphic novel that combines the best aspects of popular Sci-Fi stories will soon be released by Image Comics with the launch of Grip of Kombinat. The all-new comic is teased by the creators as being a love-letter to science fiction, with all of the evil corporate schemes and heroic space adventures fans have come to love from the genre.
Grip of Kombinat will be helmed by fan-favorite comic creator Simon Roy, who is best known for Prophet, Habitat, and First Knife, along with creator Damon Gentry who was behind Sabertooth Swordsman and Vinegar Teeth. On this new project, these creators described their creative process that spanned roughly seven years while working to shape and perfect this new and exciting sci-fi world.
In a release by Image Comics, Damon Gentry and Simon Roy outlined exactly how they came up with the idea to create Grip of Kombinat. “This book was really a labor of love for Damon and me,” said Roy in an interview released by Image Comics, “we wrote the first story WAY back in 2015 over a rowdy weekend.” Since the first time the two comic creators came up with the idea of the story that will play out in this new graphic novel, they kept at it for years as they carved out time to get together and fill in the rest of the story while evidently having some fun in the process. “Once the first piece of the puzzle was complete, we would meet up each year for weekend-long benders and write/thumbnail a few stories at a time. A process that was bad for the liver and lungs, but magic on the page,” continued Roy on their creative process. Gentry also commented on the work the two were doing and what became of their all-new story. “We dug deep on all our favorite genre fiction, ripped out their guts, and wet-slapped them together to create a terrifying Frankenstein (the doctor, not the monster).”
Grip of Kombinat tells the story of two megacorporations who have waged an eternal conflict over the ruins of the future of the entire solar system. That conflict will impact the lives of a great many who call the solar system their home, and the fallout of the conflict will assuredly be an action-packed adventure perfect for any and all fans of classic sci-fi. This series has been described as an unholy love child between Paul Verhoeven, best known for being the director of the ‘80s Sci-Fi hit film Robocop, and Isaac Asimov, who is considered one of the best sci-fi writers of all time with works including iRobot and Foundation.
The pulpy action and satirical undertones will be ever present throughout the seven chapters of Grip of Kombinat that will explore dramatic elements of unintended consequences while also being filled with ridiculously comedic moments. From what was revealed by creators Damon Gentry and Simon Roy, this new story will be everything a science fiction story could want all wrapped up in one epic graphic novel. Image Comics‘ Grip of Kombinat will be available Wednesday, June 8 and will hit bookstores on Tuesday, June 14 with pre-order available now.
