PS5: What SSD Drives Are Compatible With PlayStation 5

PS5: What SSD Drives Are Compatible With PlayStation 5

The PlayStation 5 is releasing in the United States on November 12th, 2020. The next-gen console from Sony is highly anticipated, with PS5 pre-orders and restocks selling out instantly at online retailers. The PS5 comes with its own custom SSD drive, but people can buy others to upgrade their storage if they want. While Sony hasn’t officially announced any compatible SSD drives yet, at least one company is already saying its SSDs will work on the PS5.

Sony’s PS5 comes with all sorts of impressive specs. One of these is a custom NVMe SSD drive, which has an unusual storage space of 825 GB. Because of cost efficiency and the custom PS5 storage drive, the next-gen console has slightly less storage than the 1 TB newer PS4s have. However, consumers are free to purchase their own SSD drive to upgrade if they want.

It’s unclear at this point whether or not Sony will be releasing its own SSD drive upgrades, perhaps through a partnership with a manufacturer. With only a month left before the PS5 launches, the company hasn’t officially announced any compatible SSD drives. However, Western Digital is already promoting several of its SSD drives as being compatible with Sony’s PlayStation 5.

Which SSD Drives Are Supposed To Work With The PS5

Sony hasn’t officially announced compatible SSD drives because current drives don’t meet the performance levels of the PS5. The PS5’s internal SSD is expected to run at 5.5 GB per seconds of bandwidth, which is much higher than the current peak performance of around 3.5 GB per second that current SSD drives have. However, Western Digital is promoting its own SDD drives as working with the PlayStation 5, and the SSD drives will be available in 3-4 weeks, which is just in time for the launch of the PlayStation 5.

According to Western Digital, they currently produce three NVMe SSD drives that will be compatible with the PlayStation 5. Western Digital has the SN850 NVMe SSD 500GB available for $149.99, which it claims will work with the PS5. There’s also the SN850 NVMe SSD 1TB, which will give players slightly more storage than the PS5’s current 825 GB. The 1 TB SSD drive is priced at $229.99. For anyone looking for twice the storage space, Western Digital’s SN850 NVMe SSD 2TB is available for $449.99, which means it costs almost as much as the PS5 itself.

Again, it’s important to remember that Sony hasn’t officially announced any compatible SSD drives yet. Because of that, people may want to wait for an official statement from Sony or PlayStation before buying any of these SSD drives for their PlayStation 5.
