PS5 UI Is Making Destiny 2 Update Hard To Download

Fans of Destiny 2 who have been lucky enough to pick up a PlayStation 5 are a little less lucky than some may think, as some players are having some trouble actually updating their games to the superior version due to the console’s buggy user interface (UI). The current-gen version of Destiny 2 is still free-to-play, and even those who are still playing their PS4 versions on their new PS5s through backwards compatibility can look forward to some improvements like faster loading times.

Beyond updates, just getting a PS5 has proved unreasonably difficult since its release in November. This was Sony’s biggest console launch ever, and it was sold out in an unrivaled amount of time. Unfortunately, most of the consoles were nabbed by scalpers, leading to one scalper group having more online stock than most major retailers. Between scalpers, scammers, and a pandemic still on the loose, buying a PS5 has become quite a daunting quest. Although some may be tempted to turn to scalpers to get their PS5, this can be dangerous as the price is usually hiked up, and warranty’s usually aren’t included. It is advisable to wait for a retailer to get stock again and purchase the console from a legitimate source, even if the final product might ultimately underwhelm when it comes to navigating its pretty-but-imperfect UI.

So far, it seems downloading the new PS5 update for Destiny 2 is much more difficult than it has any right to be. Jeff Gerstmann wrote on Twitter that he wasn’t sure if he was downloading the PS5 version or just redownloading the PS4 version, saying that Destiny 2 is “even worse” in this are than most titles in what is already notoriously known as one of the console’s greatest weak points. Meanwhile, Samit Sarkar outright calls the PS5 UI “bad” in a quote retweet of Tom Warren’s perplexing explanation of how to download the PS5 version of Destiny 2, which remains beyond counterintuitive for now.

Due likely to the aforementioned COVID-19 pandemic greatly complicating the console’s production and quality assurance, Sony launched the PS5 with some big problems. Some previously reported that DualSense controllers weren’t charging, PS4-to-PS5 data transfer were causing overheating, and (in the most extreme case(s)) consoles were at risk of becoming bricks due to a rogue storage glitch. Luckily, Sony has already fixed a lot of issues that were first reported through software and firmware updates, and the company seems to be doing its best to ensure the PS5’s long-term success and turn its reputation around.

Sony doesn’t normally reveal much about its hotfixes and updates, but the manufacturer has been more open about changes than usual to reassure PS5 owners and potential customers. Because Destiny 2 seems to be particularly problematic with updates compared to other titles, it’s entirely possible that this latest PS5 snafu could be blamed on developer Bungie (at least partially).

Destiny 2 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
