Rising from the depths of development hell, it looks like there’s still hope for fans of Sony’s PlayStation 4 exclusive, WiLD. It seems like an eternity since there was any movement on the open world survival game, but some new artwork teases the title’s resurrection.
Announced at 2014’s Gamescom, WiLD was tipped to be an expansive game set during the prehistoric Neolithic period. After the original announcement, WiLD impressed with an atmospheric gameplay trailer at 2015’s Paris Game Week. Despite this, things went relatively quiet and director Michel Ancel went on to work on Ubisoft’s Beyond Good & Evil 2.
Seemingly out of nowhere, WiLD’s Facebook page was updated on both May 18 and 27, sharing a series of new images and some potential cover art. The caption “Light or Darkness?” accompanied two new banners and teased an imminent announcement. Another post simply reshared artwork that fans have already seen.
It’s important to note that WiLD recently grabbed headlines. Back in March, Sony registered a trademark for the game. In Janaury 2017, Ancel shared an Instagram post to confirm WiLD was still in development and that it would use the in-house developed Linguini engine. Despite this, Wild Sheep Studio hasn’t made anything official just yet. WiLD‘s original plans included a continent-sized open world, a dynamic weather system, and online play. One of the most exciting features was the ability to play as wild creatures including wolves, fish, and birds. It’s unclear whether Wild Sheep Studio will still include all of the above in the finished product or if WiLD will have a complete overhaul.
With WiLD being resigned to the background of the studio’s plans for so long, Sony could simply be renewing the trademark as a way to keep a hold of the title. Any actual news or a release could still be a long way off as Sony concentrates on some of its bigger games. While Sony won’t be at this year’s E3, that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty of news about the studio’s exclusive titles. As well as a new trailer and the long-awaited announcement of Death Stranding‘s release date for November 8, 2019, there’s also been an update on where The Last of Us Part II is up to. Either way, it sounds like there’s still life left in WiLD and gamers could have another Far Cry Primal on their hands.
