Prison Break Reboot In Development At Hulu

Prison Break Reboot In Development At Hulu

Another Prison Break show is in development. The original Prison Break starred Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell as brothers Michael Scofield and Lincoln Burrows, who hatched a plan to break Burrows out of prison after he was wrongfully accused of a crime that landed him on death row. The show originally ran for four seasons between 2005 and 2009, later returning for the 2009 TV movie Prison Break: The Final Break and a season 5 revival in 2017.

Per Deadline, the show is headed back to the small screen, though it won’t be for Prison Break season 6. A new show set in the world of Prison Break is being developed for Hulu by Mayans M.C. co-creator Elgin James, who is set to write and executive produce. While it is still in early development, at the time of writing it is not set to feature either Michael Scofield or Lincoln Burrows.

What Will the New Prison Break Show Be About?

So far, any details as to the contents of the new Prison Break show are being kept tightly under wraps. However, it seems that they are attempting to thread the needle between a reboot and a revival while avoiding the mistakes of the short-lived Prison Break season 5. Without Michael and Lincoln the show would feel considerably different, but it could potentially still take place in a similar setting and showcase familiar locations like Fox River State Penitentiary.

One of the closest analogs that Hulu has for this new Prison Break show is the sitcom How I Met Your Father. That spinoff brought in characters from How I Met Your Mother to appear in cameos opposite a brand-new cast living out a gender-swapped scenario. While it only lasted two seasons and thus might not be a model that Prison Break is drawing on for inspiration, it seems possible that this could be a route the new show explores.

The fact that the show is a new chapter in the franchise does seem to indicate that other characters from the show can return. The Prison Break cast had a robust ensemble that included Robin Tunney, Peter Stormare, Amaury Nolasco, Marshall Allman, Sarah Wayne Callies, William Fichtner, and Jodi Lyn O’Keefe, and many characters are still alive in the world of the show and could potentially return. James’ experience with the Sons of Anarchy spinoff Mayans M.C. can potentially guide him on the right way to incorporate legacy characters and plot points while still telling a unique original story.
