Prime Video: Best New TV Shows & Movies This Week (November 1)

Prime Video: Best New TV Shows & Movies This Week (November 1)

This week’s movies and TV shows releasing on Amazon Prime Video and IMDb TV include several Amazon Originals which range from thoughtful dramas to new children’s cartoons. Many studios have been moving back to large theatrical releases and delaying their projects from arriving on streaming services around the ongoing pandemic. However, for audiences more comfortable staying at home, Amazon Prime Video is providing plenty of content, new and old, to keep their November evenings occupied as cooler weather draws in.

In October, Amazon Prime Video focused on adding horror titles that were the perfect preparation for Halloween and all things spooky. For TV they started airing the ongoing I Know What You Did Last Summer, a new installment in the long-running franchise, as well as The Walking Dead: World Beyond season 2, which is streaming weekly and will conclude this particular The Walking Dead spinoff.  Meanwhile, Amazon Prime Video’s newest movie offering included horror movies like It: Chapter Two, the sequel movie completing the Narrative of the Stephen King Book, Guillermo del Toro’s gothic romance Crimson Peak, and even a kid-friendly seasonal movie with Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit.

While Amazon Prime Video’s monthly release schedule means that their releases are spread out across different days of the week throughout the month, the first week of a new month always heralds a large bounty of content. This content usually includes movies that are making their very first appearances on streaming services, original and older TV series and older movies that are making their debut on Amazon’s streaming service. Here’s everything that is coming to Amazon Prime Video and IMDb TV during the week of November 1.

The Electrical Life of Louis Wain – November 5

Prime Video: Best New TV Shows & Movies This Week (November 1)
Benedict Cumberbatch and Claire Foy in The Electrical Life of Louis Wain

Based on a true story, The Electrical Life of Louis Wain stars Benedict Cumberbatch (known for his portrayal of Doctor Strange and his titular role in the Sherlock TV series) in the eponymous role. The movie follows the life of the eccentric British artist Louis Wain who is perhaps best known for his drawings of anthropomorphized cats and kittens with large eyes. Spanning from the late 1800s to the 1930s, The Electrical Life of Louis Wain follows his extraordinary adventures from his youth through to the end of his life as he sought to unlock the “electrical” mysteries of the real world and use them to understand his own life.

Claire Foy (Wolf Hall) stars alongside Cumberbatch as Wain’s wife, Emily Richardson. The cast also includes Andrea Riseborough, Nick Cave, Taika Waititi, Olivia Colman, and a selection of Cumberbatches fellow MCU alum with appearances from Toby Jones (Arnim Zola in Captain America: The First Avenger and beyond), Sophia Di Martino (Sylvie in Loki), and Olivier Richters (Ursa Major in Black Widow). This is not the first time Cumberbatch has taken on the true story of the life of an artist; in 2010, he portrayed Vincent Van Gogh in Painted With Words.

Tampa Baes – November 5

Amazon Original Tampa Baes

Tampa Baes represents a part of Amazon Prime Video’s growing inclusion of LGBTQ+-focused content. The eight-episode unscripted docuseries follows a group of lesbian friends as they explore Tampa Bay, an area that is noted as being an ever-growing hub for LGBTQ+ life on the Florida shoreline. The group of friends is shown to love any adventure or party as they unapologetically battle stereotypes and labels. The docuseries is expected to tackle key issues for the queer community as well as challenging each other on their own perceived notions. Tampa Baes follows Ali Myers, Nelly Ramirez, Shiva Pishdad, Jordan Whitley, Marissa Gialousis, Summer Mitchell, Cuppie Bragg, Brianna Murphy, Haley Grable, Melanie Posner, Olivia Mullins, and Mack McKenzie.

Pete The Cat (TV Series) – November 5

This Amazon Original TV series is based on the popular children’s book series Pete The Cat created by James Dean in collaboration with Eric Litwin and Dean’s wife, Kimberly Dean. Amazon has been producing animated versions of the books since 2017 and have already released two full seasons and several holiday specials. Pete The Cat’s new 2021 season sees the titular character exploring more musical adventures and he celebrates groovy holidays, puts on the evening news, throws parties, and faces his fears along with his friends.

The original Pete the Cat: A Groovy New Year starred Jacob Tremblay as the titular character with Elvis Costello and Diana Krall providing the voices of Pete’s parents. Atticus Shaffer, KT Tunstall, and Don Was provided additional voices. Since then, Jeff “Swampy” Marsh and KT Tunstall took over the roles of Pete’s parents and musicians such as Dave Matthews and Jason Mraz have guested on the show.

Native American Heritage Month – November

November is Native American Heritage Month in the United States of America. Established in 1990, the month is part of a larger effort to commemorate the history, influence, and the continued presence of indigenous peoples and nations within the United States. The history of Native Americans is too often forgotten, distorted, or erased in the popular history of the United States and the declaration of November as Native American Heritage Month, along with the federally recognized commemoration of Indigenous People’s Day on October 11, hopes to work to combat this issue. Amazon Prime Video is marking the occasion by adding a curated selection of titles which they hope will honor the culture, traditions, and impacts of Native people. Here is the complete list of titles that Amazon Prime Video is adding as part of Native American Heritage Month which includes works featuring Native American actors, producers, writers, and filmmakers.
