Prey Movie Clips Tease Predator’s Arrival & New Hero’s Warrior Skills

A trio of new Prey clips highlights the heroine’s fearsome hunting abilities before her faceoff with the Predator. The prequel to the 1987 action/sci-fi classic starring Arnold Schwarzenegger soon comes to Hulu instead of theaters but promises intense blockbuster action in a setting unique to the Predator franchise. Within the heart of the Comanche Nation in 1719, indigenous warrior Naru discovers that the prey she has been hunting is an alien creature with advanced technological capabilities. It will be this specific Predator’s first interaction with the human species, some 300 years before the original alien’s guerilla war with Arnold’s Dutch.

Amber Midthunder lands her breakout feature role as the fierce female protagonist in the 2022 film. As early synopses and trailers indicated, Naru’s initial encounter with the Predator creature leads to her assuming responsibility for defending her tribe against the hunter. The film also aims to portray the female members of Native American communities as equal to their male counterparts. This historically accurate element is not only a landmark decision for Native American representation in cinema but a first for the Predator franchise.

Before Prey premieres on Hulu on August 5, Bloody-Disgusting shares three new clips depicting Naru’s impressive hunting abilities and her first time seeing the Predator arriving on Earth. In one video, she and her canine partner hunt a deer through the forest. In another, Naru steps out to investigate a strange noise and sees a spacecraft plummeting through the clouds. Finally, Naru defends herself against a vicious bear. Check out the clips below:

The two hunting clips show off an impressive amount of stuntwork and action cinematography, which should please fans of the 1987 film. Prey’s grueling four-week boot camp may not have prepared Midthunder for all of the specific hardships she would encounter in these intense scenes, but the actress appears to tackle sliding down cliffs and underneath trees with relative ease. The clip titled Something in the Sky likely takes place soon after the deer-hunting scene, evidenced by Naru’s identical facepaint and outfit, and teases the Predator’s first appearance in the film.

All three clips provide an exciting preview of things to come in director Dan Trachtenberg’s prequel. The bear scene, in particular, is the film’s most significant showcase of action yet and displays the stakes that Midthunder’s Naru must face as one of her tribe’s most adept hunters. All three clips prove her adaptability to dangerous situations, a talent that Naru will have to make great use of against the alien invader. Any future Predator films will have to meet, if not exceed, the level of Prey’s grounded action choreography and the powerful presence of its heroine to avoid the types of criticisms that other franchise entries like The Predator have received.
