Every Star Wars fan will remember seeing Darth Vader’s incredible twist in the final minutes of The Empire Strikes Back, revealing that he never betrayed or murdered Luke Skywalker’s father… but that he was Anakin. But thanks to the new chapter of Marvel’s line of Star Wars comics, fans finally get to see the scenes which immediately followed. And they won’t have to wait for the full issue to see them, either.
While Rise of Skywalker reveals what Luke did after Return of the Jedi, the massive gap between him having his hand removed by Darth Vader (and losing his lightsaber) and his emergence as a Jedi Knight remains. That’s the story entrusted to writer Charles Soule and artist Jesus Saiz, and based on the first official preview pages for Star Wars #1, no beat will be missed. Because they’re beginning literal seconds after the movie ends.
Fans have already been promised that this Star Wars comic will finally solve the riddle of how Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber returned, so that it could be passed on to Rey in The Force Awakens. Will it be as dramatic or emotionally satisfying as a Star Wars comic fixing J.J. Abrams’s biggest Star Wars regret? Maybe not. But it doesn’t make these scenes any less thrilling to witness.
