Pretty Little Liar’s “Bloody Rose” Proves The Spinoff Has A Big Villain Advantage Over The OG Show

Pretty Little Liar’s “Bloody Rose” Proves The Spinoff Has A Big Villain Advantage Over The OG Show

Following the success of season 1, Max ordered a second season of Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, titled Pretty Little Liars: Summer School, and the first look at the show’s new villain indicates that it will continue proving how its antagonists overshadow the villains from the original series. The slasher teen drama mystery television series, created by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lindsay Calhoon Bring, serves as the fourth installment in the Pretty Little Liars franchise, following the original Freeform show, Ravenswood, and Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists. The first season premiered in 2022 and received positive reviews from critics.

Following the thrilling ending of Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, fans were hopeful that there would be more episodes, given that there were still several burning questions that Pretty Little Liars needed to answer. Thankfully, season 2 is on its way, and based on its description and pictures from the upcoming episodes, it will seemingly be as exciting and terrifying as Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin. Pretty Little Liars: Summer School chronicles the main characters attending summer school, but things get complicated when a new (frightening) villain comes to town.

PLL: Summer School’s “Bloody Rose” Proves That The Spinoff Has Scarier Villains

Season 2 Continues The Show’s Trend Of Horrifying Villains

The central villain of Pretty Little Liars: Summer School is “Bloody Rose,” who looks as scary as she sounds. The antagonist follows in season 1’s “A’s” footsteps, and she could easily live up to the previous villain’s legacy. Of course, “A” was the main antagonist throughout Freeform’s Pretty Little Liars, but the Max show dove deep into the world of horror films and made “A” much more terrifying than any villain in the original series. Now, season 2’s “Bloody Rose” will also be horror-movie inspired and likely inflict as much terror as “A” did in season 1. Lindsay Calhoon Bring told TVLine:

“The mythology of the look of [Bloody Rose’s] face is very tied to into the mythology of the show, and that’s something that [we’ll] reveal a bit later in the season … [Bloody Rose is] possibly connected to Archie Waters, as we’ll learn early on in episode 1.”

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa added:

“We knew we had to make a villain scarier than ‘A,’ and it was pretty scary in season 1.”

Although it’s a smaller sample size (and Pretty Little Liars: Summer School still hasn’t premiered), the Max series has proven that it’s much better at creating complex, scary villains than the original show. The series’ horror elements were a genius way to separate it from Freeform’s Pretty Little Liars, while also creating an entertaining and thrilling story. And they were able to do so thanks to their superior villains.

The Cast of Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin.

Since season 1 received an overwhelming amount of positive reviews from critics and viewers alike, it makes sense why the producers are continuing to take the slasher/horror movie route with Pretty Little Liars on Max. They are listening to their fans and understanding what worked in the first set of episodes by replicating season 1’s horror-inspired tones in season 2 (especially with the villain, “Bloody Rose”) — even the episode titles are inspired by horror movies. Nevertheless, only time will tell how “Bloody Rose” in Pretty Little Liars: Summer School compares to “A” in Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin.
