Prabhas’ 2023 Indian Epic Climbs Netflix Global Chart Ahead Of Kalki Release

Prabhas’ movie Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire has become a Netflix hit ahead of the Kalki 2898 AD release. The Telugu-language movie, which also stars Prithviraj Sukumaran, follows a tribesman and a prince who get caught up in a coup d’état in the fictional dystopian city of Khansaar. The movie debuted in global theaters with the highest single-day gross of any Indian movie of 2023, eventually climbing to become the fourth highest-grossing Indian release of the year and the eleventh highest of all time.

Netflix has now calculated their Top 10 Non-English Movies for the week of January 15 through January 21. Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire took No. 3 on the Netflix chart with 1.6 million viewers amassing a total of 4.7 million viewing hours, causing the movie to rank just below the German action movie 60 Minutes and the hit J.A. Bayona survival thriller Society of the Snow. The streaming success of the 2023 Indian movie comes just a few months before the May release of Prabhas’ next big movie, the big-budget sci-fi fantasy epic Kalki 2898 AD.

Will Kalki Be As Big a Hit as Salaar?

After the theatrical and streaming success of Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire, it remains to be seen if Kalki 2898 AD can follow in its footsteps. However, the 2024 Indian movie has a lot riding on its success. Kalki is India’s most expensive movie of all time, with a production budget of roughly $75 million, so it will have to be a record-breaking smash to make its money back.

The rule of thumb is that a movie needs to earn about double its production budget in order to earn a profit, meaning Kalki would likely have to gross $150 million just to break even. This is the equivalent of about 1,123 crore, the unit used to measure the box office of Indian releases. Kalki 2898 AD could exceed the success of Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire, though Prabhas’ earlier movie Baahubali 2: The Conclusion is the only one to have grossed above Kalki‘s lofty break-even point. The epic has the increasing worldwide power of the Indian box office behind it, considering the fact that three of the five releases to pass that milestone came out within the past two years. It has also been given a boost by becoming the first Indian movie to be promoted in Hall H at Comic-Con, so its international campaign has reached proportions as epic as its story.
