Power Rangers’ Original Black Ranger Just Broke Zordon’s Biggest Rule (For a Good Reason)

Power Rangers’ Original Black Ranger Just Broke Zordon’s Biggest Rule (For a Good Reason)

Warning: Spoilers for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return #1!Once his days as one of the Power Rangers are behind him, the original Black Ranger rightfully breaks one of Zordon’s most essential rules. Dating back to the first episode of the original 1990s series, Zordon laid out three specific requirements for his Rangers to follow: “Never use your power for personal gain; never escalate a battle unless Rita forces you to; and finally, keep your identities secret.”

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return #1 – written by Amy Jo Johnson & Matt Hotson, with art by Nico Leon, Francesco Segala, Gloria Martinelli, and Ed Dukeshire – features adult versions of the original ’90s Rangers. As the story catches up to where each former Ranger is now, it is revealed that after the team disbanded, Zack outed his Ranger history to the world through a tell-all book.

In the issue, Kimberly chastises him for breaking one of Zordon’s prime rules. However, as Zack argues in response, outing himself gave him opportunities to help others in a way only he can.

Zordon’s Rules Can’t Protect The Rangers In The World Of “The Return”

Power Rangers: The Return #1, original Blue Ranger Billy Cranston argues that Zack's book has done good

The reason why Zordon enforces rules like this is to protect the Rangers, not only from outside forces out of their control, but from themselves as well. Certain rules are Zordon’s best failsafe to protect the Rangers from falling down a dark path. Readers witness this Boom! Studios’ Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #103, where Kimberly escalates the battle by summoning her Zord before the monster grows. She abandons Zordon’s second rule out of anger and frustration, and sets herself up down a path toward evil.

Protecting their identities is important, in order for Zordon to protect his Rangers, but for Zack in The Return, exposing himself allows him to serve others as a hero, even without powers. By telling the world his biggest secret, Zack’s memoir is able to fund and draw attention to his annual Hip Hop Kiddo Festival, allowing him to raise two million dollars for a charitable cause. Zack never would have had that opportunity to do that if he hadn’t outed himself to the world as a Power Ranger.

Power Rangers save the world in a more obvious, overt fashion than Zack does in The Return – but as the franchise has proven time and again, no one can be a Power Ranger forever. In Zack’s case, he finds a way to continue saving the world in a more subtle, but not less vital way. He doesn’t have the power anymore to throw a battleaxe, or summon his Zord to vanquish evil, but he can use the platform he’s created, and the notoriety he’s gained to help people in need, carrying on the virtues of his Power Rangers history.
