Power Rangers Movie NYCC 2016 Posters Arrive Online

Markerting for the new Power Rangers movie (or, as it has been officially branded, Saban’s Power Rangers) is picking up speed, with Lionsgate using the 2016 New York Comic-Con to kick-start the film’s promotional push fully into gear. The Power Rangers film has the potential to serve as the beginning of a multi-installment franchise for the studio; introducing a new generation of moviegoers to the Rangers property while at the same time, attracting the older fans of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers TV show (which aired in the early 1990s) with a bid-budget re-imagining of the TV series’ mythology and characters like fan-favorite villain Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks). For these reasons, the studios behind the Power Rangers’ relaunch on the big screen are going to try and put their best foot forward with the movie’s NYCC presentation.

The Power Rangers NYCC panel takes place on Saturday, October 8th, and the first footage from the film will be shown there – with an official trailer possibly releasing online shortly thereafter. Lionsgate previously released a series of posters for the film featuring the individual Rangers atop their respective colossal assault vehicles (known as Zords), but the studio has now released another series of posters for the film; this time, focusing on just the Rangers and their suits. The team includes Dacre Montgomery as the Red Ranger, Naomi Scott as the Pink Ranger, RJ Cyler as the Blue Ranger, Ludi Lin as the Black Ranger and Becky Gomez as the Yellow Ranger.

The costumes worn by the Power Rangers in the upcoming movie reboot are designed around the idea that their suits truly “morph” and form themselves around their respective users; with director Dean Israelite (Project Almanac) having described the suits as having an “almost metaphysical quality to them,” in turn. These new posters further highlight the texture and smaller details of the Rangers’ suits, including their plate armor designs and the animal emblems from their Power Coins (which give them their morphing capabilities). At the same time, the costumes will probably continue to get their fair share of flack from fans unimpressed by how the suits form the literal shapes of their users – resulting in the female Rangers having “breast armor” that serves no real practical purpose and gives the outfits an unnecessary sexualized feel.

Yet to be unveiled are the Power Rangers’ two key allies in their continuous battle against Rita Repulsa and her minions (who are hell-bent on conquering Earth); namely, Bryan Cranston as the alien Zordon and Bill Hader as Zordon’s good-natured, if aloof, robot companion Alpha 5. Zordon, in particular, requires extensive visual effects work to bring to life, which is presumably why his new design in the Power Rangers movie has yet to be revealed in public. However, with the film’s first preview footage just around the corner thanks to NYCC, that ought to be changing very soon.
