Power Rangers Finally Explains How Ranger Colors Are Chosen 30 Years After Mighty Morphin

More than 30 years after Zordon assigned five teenagers with attitude their Ranger colors, Power Rangers explained how exactly the color of a Power Ranger is chosen. While most Power Rangers seasons stand on their own, the vast majority of the series takes place in the same continuity. As such, even though Power Rangers’ worldbuilding can be full of inconsistencies and retcons, there are still some plotlines that try to explain the franchise’s most important elements. This includes how Power Rangers Cosmic Fury tried to explain how Ranger colors are picked.

From a behind-the-scenes standpoint, the Power Rangers’ colors are often the ones that were used in the Super Sentai shows the series is adapting. For example, the classic Power Rangers costumes were the ones used in Zyuranger. Interestingly, the new season broke that tradition by creating all-new costumes for the Rangers in Cosmic Fury, the most recent entry in Power Rangers‘ chronological order.

Cosmic Fury Confirms The Morphin Grid Assigns A Power Ranger Their Color

Power Rangers Finally Explains How Ranger Colors Are Chosen 30 Years After Mighty Morphin

Power Rangers Cosmic Fury confirms that the Morphin Grid, which is what gives every Power Ranger their powers and binds the multiverse together, is what essentially decides which Ranger color a person will receive. While some Power Rangers characters were given morphers that already designed a color, such as the Ninja Storm Rangers or the Dino Thunder Rangers, others only found what colors they would be after morphing for the first time. This includes the Cosmic Fury characters, whose Cosmic Orbs only took on a specific color after they were activated for the first time. Whereas most Cosmic Fury Rangers kept their colors, Amelia morphed into Red rather than Pink.

From Mighty Morphin legends like Tommy and Jason to new names, it can be difficult to pick the best Power Rangers among so many great characters.

Original Blue Ranger Billy Cranston, who created the Cosmic Fury morphers, explained that the Morphin Grid chose to make Amelia into the Red Ranger. This reveal redefines Power Rangers’ history, and it confirms that Ranger colors do have an in-universe meaning that even the Morphin Grid itself recognizes. Therefore, when Zordon chose Jason to be the Red Ranger, the Power Rangers’ mentor was not arbitrarily associating the color red with the role of team leader. Even when some Power Rangers seemingly randomly chose their morphers, it can be assumed that the Morphin Grid was somehow influencing their decision based on what role they were meant to play.

Cosmic Fury’s Morphin Grid Reveal Fixes A 10-Year-Old Power Rangers Plot Hole

Power Rangers Super Megaforce's Gosei talking to the Rangers

Power Rangers Cosmic Fury’s Red Ranger explanation fixes a hilarious Power Rangers plot hole. In 2013’s Power Rangers Super Megaforce, Jake Holling went from Megaforce Black Ranger to Super Megaforce Green Ranger, whereas all the other characters kept their colors. The actual explanation for it is that the Sentai Super Megaforce was adapting was different from the one used in Megaforce and did not include a Black Ranger. However, when the show tried to offer an in-universe explanation for Jake’s new Ranger color, it failed. Gosei, the Rangers’ mentor, said that there was “a simple explanation for that,” yet it cut to another scene and the answer was never shown.

Now, Power Rangers Cosmic Fury confirms there was indeed a simple explanation for Jake changing Ranger colors. For some reason, the Morphin Grid decided to assign Jake the role of Green Ranger rather than Black Ranger. Likewise, the Grid chose Amelia to be Power Rangers’ new Red Ranger, whereas Zayto became the Cosmic Fury Zenith Ranger. This explanation may not apply to every single Power Rangers team, but it offers a solid in-universe explanation for how Ranger colors are chosen, and why some Rangers have changed colors when entering new teams.
