Power Rangers Casts First Full-Series Female Red Ranger

Power Rangers will officially introduce the franchise’s first female full-time Red Ranger to the roster. Often composed of a team of teenagers, the Power Rangers are given color-coded suits, superhuman abilities, and the chance to pilot some amazing machined Zords that give them even more power. With their fighting skill, the Power Rangers often face off against a variety of supervillains, typically needing to work together to create Megazords that make them an even stronger team. Yet, while the premise typically remains the same, the Power Rangers roster is ever-changing.

Now, in the lead-up to the Power Rangers‘ 30th anniversary, the team is putting together its first roster led by a full-time female Red Ranger. Hunter Deno, who plays Amelia Jones as the Pink Ranger in Power Rangers: Cosmic Fury, shared on Instagram a concept art and a video debuting her new look in the Red Ranger costume.

While Power Rangers: Cosmic Fury will keep its cast in place for the 30th anniversary, it will be shuffling some of the members, including Amelia inheriting the responsibilities of the Red Ranger. In the same Instagram post, Deno made it clear just how honored she is to have the chance to be the first female Red Ranger to take on the role as a permanent position.

Why A Female Red Ranger Is Such A Big Deal

The Red Ranger typically serves as the Power Rangers’ leader, which is why it’s such a big deal that Deno has earned the position. Though there have been many Red Rangers, none have ever been women for more than short-term or temporary stints. Power Rangers has been working to fix LGBTQ+ and female representation after many mistakes in the past. Hence, Deno’s rise to take on the Red Ranger position is a great sign going forward to break this typecast.

Additionally, Deno is proving that female characters can be more than just Pink and Yellow Rangers. In the past, they have been left in those roles and given no opportunity to branch out any further. This has changed in some versions, with some female Rangers becoming the Blue Ranger while Izzy Garcia became the first main female Green Ranger. Now, this news further breaks the stereotype and allows a chance to show female Rangers in other color-coded suits, particularly in the case of the team’s significant leader. With new Power Rangers busts being released for the 30th anniversary, it is also a sign that Power Rangers will improve its representation through future action figures as well that have only been male Red Rangers up to this point.
