Power Rangers’ 8 Best Evil Rangers, Ranked

Power Rangers’ 8 Best Evil Rangers, Ranked

There have been dozens of evil Power Rangers in the franchise, from legendary characters like Mighty Morphin’s Green Ranger to newer additions like Cosmic Fury’s Blue Ranger. Although there are some great Power Rangers villains, it was difficult for the show to introduce threatening antagonists considering the episodic nature of it. The regular monsters had to be defeated at the end of every episode, which is why the evil Ranger storylines were always so special.

Unlike the regular monsters, the evil Rangers would usually appear for at least a couple of episodes, serving as more elaborate villains. Some of the best Power Rangers seasons only achieved such status because of how great their antagonists, including at least one evil Power Ranger, were. Power Rangers’ best evil Rangers are the ones who are still remembered for their villainous actions even though most of them were redeemed and joined the good guys.

Void Knight (Power Rangers Dino Fury)

An alien Ranger with a compelling mission

Whereas almost every evil Ranger in Power Rangers only opposed the heroes for a couple of episodes, Void Knight was Dino Fury’s main antagonist for more than one season. While it can be argued that Void Knight was not a traditional Power Ranger, he had a morpher and needed to tap into the Morphin Grid to use his powers. This purple Ranger was introduced as a villain whose only goal was to collect all Sporix monsters, with the show later revealing he was doing such because of his dying wife.

Void Knight needed the power of the Sporix to wake up his wife from a coma, which he managed to do after several battles against the Power Rangers. However, Tarrick’s wife was corrupted by that power herself and emerged as Void Queen, who replaced Void Knight as Dino Fury’s villain. Tarrick had no choice but to come to the Rangers for help, setting up his redemption arc that would be concluded with the shocking reveal that he was Pink Ranger Amelia’s father. Tarrick returned in Cosmic Fury as one of the leaders of Earth’s resistance against Lord Zedd and Bajillia.

Thunder Rangers (Power Rangers Ninja Storm)

Two ninjas looking for revenge

Ninja Storm begins with three core Rangers but later introduces two other warriors, the Thunder Rangers. Hunter and Blake Bradley were originally framed as villains looking for revenge and willing to destroy the Power Rangers. The Crimson and Blue Navy Rangers were led to believe that the Wind Academy was responsible for the destruction of their own academy, which had seemingly resulted in the death of their parents. Stronger and more experienced than Shane, Tori, and Justin, the Thunder Rangers gave the Ninja Rangers some tough battles.

The Thunder Rangers had one of the coolest character designs in the franchise, particularly regarding their shields. Crimson red and blue navy are not particularly common Power Rangers colors either, which made Hunter and Blake’s Ranger forms even more impactful. Unlike many evil Rangers, the Thunder Rangers were not brainwashed by magic or gadgets. Instead, they truly believed the Wind Rangers were their enemies, which made their rivalry personal and raised the stakes for the series. Fortunately, they eventually realized they were being lied to and joined the Wind Rangers to form a larger Ninja Storm team.

6
Titanium Ranger (Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue)

A tragic Ranger raised by the villains

Ryan Mitchell made for an incredible sixth Ranger, perhaps the best in the franchise, but he also made for a great evil Ranger. Before he joined the Lightspeed team, the Titanium Ranger was out for revenge, namely against his father. Ryan arguably had the darkest Power Rangers origin story of all time, having been kidnapped by Diabolical after a car accident almost got his entire family killed. The son of Captain Mitchell was raised by the villains and led to believe that his father chose to save his sister, Dana, instead of him.

As an adult, Ryan was sent to steal the Titanium morpher and become a Power Ranger that would work for the Demons. While Ryan’s run as a villain did not last very long, it led to some amazing moments. This includes the scene in which Captain Mitchel recognizes his son after only getting a glimpse of the Titanium Ranger’s eyes, followed by a heated argument in which Red Ranger Carter wants to understand why the captain ordered not to destroy this new evil Ranger. Ryan and Captain Mitchell’s reconciliation was quite emotional and brought the Titanium Ranger into the team.

5
A-Squad Rangers (Power Rangers S.P.D.)

Ranger deserters who aligned themselves with the villain

Power Rangers S.P.D.’s B-Squad, the characters viewers followed during all of the show, were not supposed to become Power Rangers. This honor was originally given to the A-Squad, but they were sent on a mission from which no one came back. Although it appeared that the original S.P.D. Rangers had been killed in combat, it turned out that the team betrayed the S.P.D. organization and aligned themselves with the villain. The A-Squad was defeated by Emperor Gruum’s monsters and decided to switch sides, a bold storyline that Power Rangers had never used before.

Evil Rangers turning good is very common in Power Rangers, but the other way around rarely happens. This is why Power Rangers S.P.D.’s A-Squad were such interesting characters. There is also the underdog element that comes with the B-Squad, as they were not the best cadets S.P.D. had to offer but made for far more loyal Power Rangers than the A-Squad did. Of course, A-Squad and B-Squad eventually met on the battlefield, and the former were eventually defeated and arrested.

4
Evil Blue Ranger Ollie (Power Rangers Cosmic Fury)

A veteran Ranger brainwashed by Lord Zedd

A new addition to the roster of evil Rangers, Cosmic Fury’s Ollie was brainwashed by Lord Zedd in the first few minutes of the show. This was the second time Ollie was controlled by Lord Zedd, who had already appeared in Power Rangers Dino Fury. What makes Cosmic Fury’s evil Blue Ranger so good is that the character remained evil for most of the show, whereas most brainwashed Rangers joined the heroes after a couple of episodes. Cosmic Fury had no filler episodes and saw in the evil Blue Ranger a recurring antagonist.

Ollie had been a divisive character in Dino Fury, but the decision to make him a temporary villain in Cosmic Fury was met with a lot of praise. In addition to Kai Moya’s performance and the great fight scenes involving the character, evil Ranger Ollie had a fantastic suit that belongs in the list of Power Rangers’ best costumes. In a season defined by original, controversial Power Rangers suits, Ollie’s evil Blue Ranger costume stood out and felt like it was from a Super Sentai show.

3
White Ranger Trent (Power Rangers Dino Thunder)

A reimagined version of the Green Ranger’s story

Dino Thunder can be considered a love letter to Mighty Morphin, from the dinosaur motif to the return of Tommy Oliver. The 2004 series also had its own version of the Green Ranger story with the White Ranger arc, which very much mirrored Tommy’s introduction in the original series. Like Tommy, Trent was friends with the Power Rangers in high school but was brainwashed by the villains into becoming an evil Ranger. Also like Tommy, White Ranger Trent was significantly more powerful than the other Rangers at first and easily defeated them all.

Dino Thunder acknowledged the similarities between the stories of Tommy and Trent by having Dr. Oliver vouch for the White Ranger. Tommy knew exactly what Trent was going through and made sure that the Power Rangers would not give up helping. In addition to his well-written story, Dino Thunder’s White Ranger made his mark on the franchise thanks to an instant classic costume that stood out from those of the other characters. Curiously, Dino Thunder later introduced a second evil White Ranger – a clone of Trent.

2
Psycho Rangers (Power Rangers in Space)

Massively powerful monsters created to destroy Rangers

The Psycho Rangers had no complex backstory or a compelling reason to go after the Rangers. Instead, they were monsters whose only purpose was to cause destruction and obtain more power. With an incredible design in which the armors felt like they were part of the characters’ bodies, the Psycho Rangers took the evil Ranger trope to the next level by removing the human element from the equation. There was no need for brainwashing gimmicks or manipulations – these five Rangers were ready to attack the heroes at any time and never ran away from a fight.

The first battle between the In Space Rangers and the Psycho Rangers is the closest thing Power Rangers ever got to having a dark, gritty episode in the style of what viewers would expect from a more mature reboot. The In Space Rangers did not stand a chance against their Psycho counterparts, which raised the stakes for the rest of the show and established the Psycho Rangers as a force to be reckoned with. Every Psycho Ranger appearance ever since has been in a Power Rangers highlight not only in the TV show but also the comics.

1
Green Ranger Tommy (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers)

Power Rangers’ original evil Ranger

While the evil Ranger trope comes from Super Sentai, part of the reason why Power Rangers continued to use it was the success of Mighty Morphin’s Green Ranger arc. To this day, Tommy’s first five episodes in Power Rangers are among the franchise’s most recognizable, from the first battle between the Green Ranger and the heroes to Tommy’s first morph as a good guy. Many of the story beats that Power Rangers would replicate in future seasons with other evil Rangers were born from Mighty Morphin’s Green With Evil.”

A brainwashed, evil Power Ranger with a cooler costume, unique gadgets, and a personal Megazord made the Green Ranger into a pop culture icon. Even the lack of Green Ranger action figures compared to the core team contributed to his popularity. That said, even without considering Tommy’s impact on the show, the Green Ranger made for a scary villain that was unlike anything the series had done up until that point. Instead of another random Rita Repulsa monster, the Power Rangers had to fight someone with a similar set of skills that almost defeated them once and for all.
