In Lazarus Planet: Assault on Krypton #1 by DC Comics, Power Girl explains what some people miss about her accomplishments, as her smarts and incredible abilities have accomplished feats on the multiversal level, where even blockbuster heroes like Black Adam and Superman have fallen victim to forces larger than any one universe. Though she’s been pushed into the background before, this short story revamps Power Girl ahead of a new place in the Superman Family.
In Lazarus Planet Assault on Krypton #1‘s ‘Deus Ex Magicka’ by Leah Williams, Marguerite Sauvage, and Becca Carey, Power Girl finds herself inside a nightmare reality following the magical explosion caused by the Lazarus Volcano eruption. As she drifts across a bizarre dreamscape of someone else’s nightmare, believing she is dying, the environment adapts to her presence, calling the hero out for her self-doubts, insecurities, and tragic origin. However, the issue reminds readers that Power Girl’s strength, intelligence, and technological prowess have allowed her to beat countless villains and survive multiple Crisis events. Where entire realities have fallen, Power Girl has triumphed.
Power Girl Is Back, & She’s Not Taking Any Disrespect
Despite Power Girl having Kryptonian powers rivaling the likes of Superman, Supergirl, and other powerful super-people in the DC Universe, the Earth-Two hero has often been reduced to her physical appearance instead of being recognized for her heroism and abilities. Power Girl’s looks and controversial costume have become a key identifier for the hero, often overshadowing her fascinating backstory and incredible potential. However, in this new anthology story, Power Girl’s smarts, strength, and survival ability are placed back at the center of her narrative.
DC Has Plans for Power Girl’s Future
Interestingly, as the issue has Power Girl confront her self-doubt, the hero learns she has a power she’s never been able to access before. After encountering the former Teen Titan Omen, Power Girl learns she has psychic powers, unlocking them after being trapped inside the hero’s nightmare. With Power Girl getting a role in the recent Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths, and DC indicating she’ll become a major part of the Superman family and add the House of El symbol to her costume, it seems DC is committed to elevating her in future stories.
Of all DC’s underrated heroes, Power Girl has perhaps the most potential to grow, change, and show what she’s always been made of. Given how often she’s overlooked or reduced to just her appearance, it’s refreshing to see DC showcase what makes Power Girl special in the DC Universe.
