Power Girl’s “Illegal” Team-Up Could Boot Her from Superman’s Family for Good

Power Girl’s “Illegal” Team-Up Could Boot Her from Superman’s Family for Good

Warning: SPOILERS for Power Girl #5

Out of all the members of the Superman Family, few have as unique a connection to their fellow Kryptonians as Power Girl. As Supergirl’s variant from Earth-2, Kara Zor-L — also known as Dr. Paige Stetler — always stood somewhat outside Earth-0’s House of El until fairly recently. But with Supergirl coming to her alone for some unexpected help, Power Girl could be jeopardizing her place within her newfound family.

Power Girl #5 by Leah Williams and David Baldeón ends with the titular powerhouse being visited by her Kryptonian counterpart Supergirl as she recovers from recent adventures. Assuming Kara is there to ask for help with a Super-Family mission, Supergirl reveals that Superman and his allies, in fact, don’t even know she’s there.

Supergirl explains that this is a mission she can only turn to Power Girl for help with, even describing it as: “Also. Maybe. Perhaps. Illegal? While Power Girl has never been the type to turn down someone’s request for help, this mission might be one she regrets.

Power Girl’s Next Supergirl Team Up Could Lead to Major Problems

Comic book panels: Supergirl Hugs Power Girl

Despite their unorthodox alternate-universe family ties, Kara Zor-El and the rest of the Els haven’t always had the best relationship with Paige, and vice versa. As a multiversal refugee, Power Girl has typically spent more time associating with the Justice Society, Justice League International, and even the Birds of Prey before cementing her place within the Superman Family. Even so, this period of growth has had its share of awkward moments between Power Girl and Supergirl throughout 2023.

Kara turning to Paige for help could be the ultimate olive branch between the pair. Power Girl has always been a bit of a rebel, with her own hotheadedness occasionally getting in her own way, so she’s the logical choice for a potentially illegal and morally gray mission with Supergirl. Unfortunately, such a potentially dangerous ask also puts Paige’s relationship with the rest of the Superman Family at risk. After all, the Power Girl series already began with Superman questioning Paige’s methods, and while Clark may be the most patient man in the world, even he has his limits.

Power Girl Will Help Whoever Needs Her

With Power Girl finally and officially part of the Superman Family, she’s finally found the family that she’s felt like she’s been missing for most of her history. Unfortunately, with family comes obligation, and with her literal duplicate asking her for assistance, Paige isn’t in much of a position to refuse. Whether this illegal operation gets Dr. Stetler kicked out of the House of El remains to be seen, but one thing will always be true – Power Girl will help whoever needs it, just like Superman and the rest of their superpowered family.

Power Girl #5 is available now from DC Comics.
