Lego Porgs are seen recreating the famous “come play with us” scene from Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining in a poster for Lego Star Wars Terrifying Tales, a new animated Halloween special on Disney+. The 44-minute special follows last year’s The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special, which poked fun at all nine films in the Skywalker Saga through a festive lens.
In the official poster released by Star Wars on Facebook, two Porgs parody the twin ghost-girls from the Overlook Hotel from Kubrick’s iconic 1980 horror film The Shining. As well as the visual motifs, the poster also references one of The Shining’s most memorable quotes, with a tagline that reads “All work and no porg makes Darth a dull toy” in an obvious adaptation of the line, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” What’s more, the tagline also implies viewers will get to see Darth Vader engaging in some thrills and scares in the upcoming special. The Porgs, made famous for their appearance in Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Episode VIII), became somewhat of a merchandising sensation for the Star Wars brand, and so their Lego counterparts soon followed suit. In addition to some potential Porg cameos, according to an earlier trailer, viewers can also expect familiar Star Wars characters like Poe Dameron, Graballa the Hutt, Vaneé, Emperor Palpatine and Ren to pop up in Terrifying Tales.
This new poster for the Halloween special perfectly captures the self-referential spirit of the current Lego Star Wars animations, which combine family-friendly humour with some more classic jokes and parodies for parents and long-time fans. Viewers of the special can expect plenty of laughs, familiar moments and, perhaps, plenty of Porgs.
