Poor Things Rotten Tomatoes Score Ties A Major Emma Stone Record

Poor Things‘ Rotten Tomatoes score has tied a major Emma Stone record. The latest film from director Yorgos Lanthimos and writer Tony McNamara follows a young Victorian woman named Bella Baxter who is reanimated by a brilliant scientist and runs off with a debauched lawyer to embark on a journey of self-discovery and sexual liberation. In addition to Stone, the cast includes Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, Ramy Youssef, Christopher Abbott and Jerrod Carmichael.

This past September, Poor Things premiered at the Venice Film Festival to rave reviews and since then, more and more have been making their way online. Now that the Poor Things release date has arrived, its Rotten Tomatoes score has settled at a strong 93%. Though the score may still fluctuate, this ties 2018’s The Favourite – the last film from Lanthimos, McNamara, and Stone – for the best score of her career.

Emma Stone is one of the most celebrated actresses of her generation, so Poor Things‘ Rotten Tomatoes score passed some tough competition to tie for her career-best. Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) and La La Land are tied for her second-best score at 91%. The former film, directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, won Best Picture and earned Stone her first Academy Award nomination for a supporting role. Damien Chazelle’s La La Land lost Best Picture to Moonlight in the infamous Oscar mix-up, though it did win Stone her first Academy Award for a leading role.

Emma Stone’s next collaboration with Yorgos Lanthimos is the upcoming dark comedy Poor Things, and it has a chance at breaking a record.

In terms of Yorgos Lanthimos movies, Poor Things‘ Rotten Tomatoes score also ties for his career-best with his early breakthrough, Dogtooth. The director began his career by making low-budget Greek films, but has since transitioned to higher-budget English-language films like The Lobster (87%) and The Killing of a Sacred Deer (79%), which have cemented his reputation as a wholly unique auteur. Like Stone, Lanthimos has earned three Oscar nominations for his work. With the two talents behind another masterpiece in Poor Things, the film should be in serious contention this awards season if its Rotten Tomatoes score is any indication.
