Polaris Officially Declares Herself the “New Master of Magnetism” – But What Will Magneto Have To Say About That?

As the mutants’ brutal war against Orchis rages on, Polaris uses her magnetic might to bring the celestial Knowhere to Earth in Fall of the House of X #2, from writer Gerry Duggan with artists Lucas Werneck and Bryan Valenza, declaring herself the “new master of magnetism” and proving she is more than ready for the iconic title.

The powerful Lorna Dane has struggled with mental illness her entire life, canonically diagnosed with bipolar disorder and also suffering through a truly horrific number of mental possessions. This instability has caused Polaris to doubt her ability, and struggle with agency in her life. Of course, Lorna must also deal with the expectations placed on her by her father Magneto, as well as everyone else’s expectations of her as Magneto’s daughter. It doesn’t help that they share the same magnetic power, except Magneto is classified as Omega-level, meaning she has always tried and failed to reach his level of ability.

In Fall of the House of X #2, we see a confident and collected Polaris utilizing her immense magnetic might and years of field experience to become a true terror for Orchis. Even if Lorna might not be an Omega, she is capable of moving the entirety of Knowhere without breaking a sweat, saving her friends, and taking down Orchis’ incredibly important Bloom station. Confidently naming herself the “new master of magnetism” and donning an outfit inspired by her father’s classic look is her way of honoring her father and herself, keeping his legacy going even after his death, and proving that she has faith in her agency.

Magneto’s Resurrection Could Cause Tension In The Family

It is unclear how Magneto would actually react to his daughter claiming his title as Master of Magnetism. While he would surely be proud of her for stepping up and helping to save the X-Men, he has also called Lorna a disappointment, inconsistent, and even unhinged. Magneto is nothing if not a prideful man, and after his upcoming resurrection, he could struggle with his daughter seemingly claiming his classic title. However, it could inspire him to go a different direction in his heroic journey, and let Lorna become Marvel’s permanent new Master of Magnetism!

It is inspiring to see the iconic X-Men hero Polaris so confident with her magnetic abilities, honoring her late father’s legacy even though their relationship has always been complex and contentious. Hopefully, if Magneto is eventually resurrected by Storm, the father and daughter will be able to share the title, and Lorna will continue to grow confidence in her worth and abilities.
