Pokémon’s Wiglett Reveal Prompts More Possible Diglett Variants

The recent reveal of Wiglett for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet has led fans to create their own Diglett variants – with some hilarious results. Rather than being a variant or Pokémon evolution, Wiglett has officially been confirmed as a new Garden Eel Water-type for Scarlet and Violet. Nintendo has also had fun with fans who’ve noticed Wiglett’s similarities to Diglett, stating that “any resemblance to Diglett is […] purely coincidental” in its official reveal earlier in the week. The idea of separate Pokémon being similar has been touched upon by the series before with duos like Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan among others. However, these discrepancies are usually addressed by adding new Pokémon in different generations to a previous evolution’s lineage, such as Tyrogue and Hitmontop from the previous example. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are diverging from the series in a few key areas, though, most notably with its open-world setting. Wiglett typifies some of these changes, showing that SV will be familiar to most players, but different in certain areas.Related: Pokémon Scarlet & Violet Leaks Tease Regional Forms Not In Gen 9 PokédexTwitter user MrDjWalnut posted some Pokémon Scarlet and Violet fan art this week having fun with the recent Wiglett announcement, coming up with their own Diglett-esque creations derived from words and names that rhyme with the Earth-type Pokémon’s name. On top of drawing Diglett and Wiglett, Walnut’s drawing also features Piglett (a pig-Diglett fusion), Twiglett (a literal twig), Jigglett (jelly given Pokémon form), and Bigglett (who is just a bigger Diglett). The roster of Diglett copycats is rounded out by Figlett and Stiglett, the latter of which is modeled on the silent race car driver from the BBC’s Top Gear series. All the designs take from Diglett’s base appearance, which has led to some great results.

Diglett’s Appearance Has Been The Subject Of Pokémon Memes Before

This isn’t the first time that Diglett has found itself the focus of Pokémon memes and jokes. Pokémon‘s “ripped Diglett” meme imagined the Ground-type with a shredded physique, which is naturally always hidden due to the fact the only part of their body that’s visible in-game is their upper half. Although a completely different Pokémon, the introduction of Wiglett in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet has reignited these Diglett memes, showing that it is perhaps one of the funniest creatures in Nintendo’s franchise.

MrDJWalnut’s Wiglett art is a great example of how much fun fans can have with the Pokémon franchise, as well as how endearing its various character designs can be. Diglett is an old favorite, and creatures like Wiglett can put a fresh twist on them. Hopefully Pokémon Scarlet and Violet will have more Wiglett-level surprises in store when it releases November 18.
