Pokémon Legends: Arceus – Avalugg Boss Battle Guide

Avalugg, Lord of the Tundra, is the final frenzied Noble Pokémon in Pokémon Legends: Arceus that Trainers must face in a challenging boss fight. Unlike typical Pokémon battles that players experience throughout the game, Noble Pokémon bosses always require Trainers to learn and memorize the Pokémon’s various attacks. Knowing when to throw Balms or dodge is crucial for surviving the vicious onslaught of the boss. In other words, timing is vital when battling Noble Pokémon in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, especially Avalugg.

As an Ice and Rock-Type Pokémon, Avalugg is vulnerable to Fighting and Steel-Type moves. As a result, Gallade or Hisuian Decidueye would be excellent picks for this matchup. Hisuian Decidueye is the final evolution of the Starter Pokémon Rowlet. Rowlet becomes Dartrix at Level 17 and Decidueye at Level 36. On the other hand, Trainers can obtain Gallade by catching its base form, Ralts. Ralts can be found in multiple locations across Hisui, including Gapejaw Bog and the Shrouded Ruins within the Crimson Mirelands and Heart’s Crag and the Snowpoint Temple of the Alabaster Icelands. Once Ralts reaches Level 20, it becomes Kirlia. Yet, to evolve it into Gallade, players need a Dawn Stone in Pokémon Legends: Arceus.

The most reliable way to get a Dawn Stone in Arceus is by purchasing one from the Trading Post in Jubilife Village for 1,200 Merit Points. Merit Points are earned from finding Lost Satchels across Hisui’s regions. Once players procure the Dawn Stone, they can give it to Kirlia to acquire Gallade. However, if players have neither Gallade nor Hisuian Decidueye, Hisuian Samurott, the final form of Oshawott, is another excellent choice against Avalugg.

How to Beat Avalugg in Pokémon Legends: Arceus

Once the boss battle begins, Avalugg will start spewing Ice Balls from its mouth, sweeping the arena in a back-and-forth motion. Avoid the projectiles by dodging into the left and right corners of the area. Players who are confident enough can throw one or two Snow Balms in between each roll. Avalugg’s next combat move in Pokémon Legends: Arceus is summoning rows of Ice Pillars. Forgo throwing Balms to watch the ground carefully to know when to dodge. Afterward, Avalugg will launch Icicle Spears that directly target the player. Finally, the Noble Pokémon will fire a single Ice Beam from its mouth and scan the arena. Utilize dodge i-frames to prevent taking damage.

Between each attack, it’s vital that Trainers hurl as many Balms as they can before Avalugg primes its next ability. At the end of the segment, players must use their Pokémon to engage in a turn-based battle with the boss. Once the fight is over, the Lord of the Tundra will repeat the same abilities above. However, the Ice Pillar ability will leave spikes on the ground this time. Remember to prioritize dodging, as being greedy for attacks can result in a game over in Pokémon Legends: Arceus.

As Avalugg’s HP drops, it will become increasingly aggressive, combining attacks, such as Ice Balls with Icicle Spears. At this time, Trainers need to be focused on waiting for an opening to throw Balms. However, with proper timing and patience, players can overcome Avalugg and defeat the Lord of the Tundra in Pokémon Legends: Arceus.
