PlayStation Studio Teases Secret Game After God Of War Ragnarök

PlayStation Studio Teases Secret Game After God Of War Ragnarök

PlayStation’s Sony Santa Monica Studio is reportedly working on a few projects following God of War Ragnarok. Last week, the final chapter of Kratos and Atreus’ journey across the Nine Realms of Norse mythology launched to near-universal acclaim after two long years of hype and speculation. In God of War Ragnarok, Kratos and his son find themselves tasked with uncovering the truth behind a prophecy that foretells the end of the world as they battle against dangerous foes like Odin and Thor, as well as their own personal demons.

Even as players continue to dive into God of War Ragnarok’s lengthy story, developer Sony Santa Monica is busy planning its next big project for PlayStation. In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, former God of War (2018) director Corey Barlog revealed that his studio is currently “spread out on a lot of different things,” but declined to go into further detail. God of War Ragnarok director Eric Williams added that if Sony Santa Monica decides to devote itself to God of War sequels full-time, that would be fine. The two directors also discussed the many challenges that came with crafting God of War Ragnarok, such as reimagining the game’s take on Nordic legends.

Sony Santa Monica Could Move On From God Of War In Next Project

While Sony Santa Monica is widely known for its work on the brutal God of War series, the California-based developer has an impressive resume of indie titles and triple-A blockbusters under its External Development branch. This includes assisting other Sony-owned studios and providing additional work on Thatgamecompany’s thoughtful and mysterious 2012 release Journey. Sony Santa Monica has occasionally referenced a canceled project that is said to have had a sci-fi focus.

Sony Santa Monica could revive this project for its next big PlayStation-exclusive title, or the “different things” Corey Barlog mentioned in his recent interview could be something else entirely. Eric Williams brings up the possibility of another God of War follow-up, and while Ragnarok serves as the final chapter of Kratos’ Norse adventures, the series could shift its focus once again to another setting like ancient Egypt, which was previously featured in some God of War concept art from Sony Santa Monica.

Given how Corey Barlog isn’t ready to give out any specifics about Sony Santa Monica’s next big PlayStation title, it will likely be some time before the studio is ready to unveil what it is currently working on. Meanwhile, fans are still diving into the rich lore and epic combat of God of War Ragnarok, which is already shaping up to be one of 2022’s biggest game releases a mere week after its highly anticipated launch.
