PlayStation Discord Connection Finally Looks Imminent

It looks like PlayStation’s previously announced Discord integration could be coming soon. Sony revealed that it would be entering a partnership with the popular media messaging platform after Microsoft walked away from its own negotiations with Discord last April. Discord was first launched in 2015 and allows users to communicate via text, video call, and voice call, with the service being utilized by over 140 million monthly active users as of the past couple of years.

When it comes to gaming, Discord allows players to form online communities, join player groups and chat with their friends while playing titles like Call Of Duty or Grand Theft Auto Online. PlayStation CEO and President Jim Ryan announced that his company was aiming to add Discord support to PlayStation platforms early this year, especially after Sony announced that it would be discontinuing the PlayStation 4’s Communities feature not too long before the partnership with Discord was announced. To secure a partnership with Discord, Sony Interactive Entertainment made a minority investment in Discord’s Series H round and spoke with Discord co-founders Jason Citron and Stan Vishnevskiy.

As reported by MP1st, various Reddit users have uncovered signs of PlayStation’s Discord connection being launched sooner rather than later on Discord’s backend. User jankesjt posted a screenshot of the PlayStation logo being included among the many services Discord can connect to on r/discordapp last month, and DerpyChap shared a link from a data miner that includes the PlayStation account link feature that Discord is likely implementing on r/GamingLeaksAndRumors. Twitter user AJ from Okami Games also shared a post suggesting that PlayStation Network’s Discord integration could be coming soon.

Discord is far from the only new feature Sony is implementing for the PlayStation 5, as it recently announced an updated PlayStation VR 2 headset – complete with Horizon Forbidden West developer Guerrilla Games working on a spin-off VR title called Horizon: Call of the Mountain as one of the first games to utilize it. Meanwhile, the PS5 itself continues to break sales records despite continuing production issues brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and a shortage of semiconductors that will likely continue well into this year.

Given how popular Discord is as a platform to connect people with similar interests all over the world, having support for it as a feature for PlayStation consoles is a considerable win for Sony. Although there isn’t an official launch date for PlayStation’s Discord connection, these recent findings suggest that it might not be long before Discord users will be able to run their accounts on Sony consoles and connect with other Discord users in the middle of a multiplayer round.
