‘Pirates of the Caribbean 4’ Set Pics & Casting Updates

Production officially began on Pirates of the Caribbean 4 yesterday in Hawaii and producer Jerry Bruckheimer wasted no time in twittering images from the set.  We also have a casting update about a model/actress who will be hitting the pirate seas.

Bruckheimer is also encouraging fans to join his Facebook Fan Page where he promises to continually post photos and other special content as filming progresses.

While the first photo of Bruckheimer sitting on set doesn’t appear to be all that exciting at first glance, check out the film’s logo on the back of the chair. You can see the famous skull and crossbones has been slightly altered to reflect Pirates of the Caribbean 4‘s plot- the search for the Fountain of Youth.

This next one is basically the photo equivalent of name-dropping. Still, I can’t blame Jerry- I’d be excited about sitting next to Johnny Depp too. It certainly whipped the female readers of his twitter page into a frenzy (are those Johnny’s footprints? Gasp!).

Finally, there’s director Rob Marshall arriving to the set on a jet ski (not a bad way to get to work). All past drama aside, it looks like things are off to an enjoyable start. Marshall was always excited to get the job and his enthusiasm is showing no signs of waning. Still, let’s see how he looks on the last day of shooting a summer tentpole blockbuster. Maybe Bruckheimer will tweet a photo for comparison?

While there are no huge revelations or spoilers lurking in these photos, it’s pretty amazing how in-depth a look audiences get behind the curtain these days. What do you think – if Bruckheimer plans to cover a great deal of the production in this same manner (revealing characters, costumes, sets, etc.) is he building hype or potentially lessening the impact of the finished film?

In other Pirates 4 news, Australian website Courier Mail is reporting that Australian supermodel-turned-actress Gemma Ward has joined the Stranger Tides cast. You might not immediately recognize Ward (see: the header image), but she does have acting experience, most notably as one of the masked psychos who terrorized Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman in The Strangers.

Ward will apparently play a mermaid in the movie alongside French actress Astrid Berges-Frisbey.

Pirates of the Caribbean 4 is set to sail into theaters next summer and stars Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane, Stephen Graham, Astrid Berges-Frisbey and Sam Calflin.

What do you think of the new logo? Will you be following more of Bruckheimer’s sneak peeks or do you want as little spoiled as possible before you see Pirates of the Caribbean 4?
