Warning! This article contains spoilers for Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 3.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 3 saw the titular character receiving a prophecy from the Oracle of Delphi, a prophecy which will have big ramifications on season 1’s story. After the story reveals of Percy Jackson episodes 1 and 2, Percy is ready to undertake a quest to the Underworld to solve the mystery of Zeus’ stolen master bolt and save his mother. However, as introduced in the Percy Jackson book series, the demigods from Camp Half-Blood must first consult a creature named the Oracle to receive a prophecy before leaving on a quest.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 3 opens with this scene involving the Oracle, introducing yet another Greek mythological creature to Percy Jackson’s ever-expanding world. Given that Percy was revealed as a forbidden child in episode 2 – a child born in spite of Percy Jackson‘s Big Three pact between Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades – the character will undergo several dangers throughout season 1’s story. Some of these dangers were hinted at in the prophecy spouted by the Oracle of Delphi, teasing the adventure that will unfold in Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1.

Percy Jackson Episode 3 Gives Percy His First Prophecy From The Oracle Of Delphi

The first of many prophecies the titular character will receive was provided in Percy Jackson episode 3.

In Percy Jackson‘s world, the Oracle of Delphi is one of the ancient Greek elements that now exists in the modern world. In ancient times, a human maiden who possessed the gift of clairvoyance was chosen by the god of prophecies, Apollo, to inherit the spirit of Delphi. From then on, this host would give prophecies to heroes and the gods, even after death. By the time of Percy Jackson and the Olympians‘ story, the Oracle of Delphi is now a husk of a woman who has lived for thousands of years who gives prophecies to the heroes of Camo Half-Blood.

In Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 3, Percy visits the Oracle to receive a prophecy for his quest to the Underworld. The Oracle of Delphi takes the form of Gabe, Percy’s stepfather, and recounts the lines:

“You shall go west and face the god who has turned, and you shall find what was stolen and see it safely returned. You shall be betrayed by the one who calls you friend, and fail to save what matters most in the end.”

This prophecy naturally outlines the quest Percy accepted in Percy Jackson episode 2’s ending. Percy will travel west to Los Angeles, the entrance to the Underworld. There he will face Hades, the god who is suspected to have turned against his brothers by stealing Zeus’ master bolt and Percy’s mother. The latter two lines apply to the end of Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1, though all four lines of the prophecy prove one thing in this universe: one should not attempt to make sense of prophecies’ intentionally unclear words.

Percy Jackson Episode 3’s Prophecy Explains Why Percy Chose Annabeth & Grover For The Quest

Percy chose his quest companions carefully with the prophecy’s words in mind.

By the end of Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 3, Percy explains why he chose Annabeth and Grover as his quest companions based on the lines of the prophecy. The line “You shall be betrayed by the one who calls you ‘friend…” is shown to deeply trouble Percy with the following line making him fear that this betrayal will cause him to fail to save his mother. As explained by Percy, he picked Annabeth for the quest as he could never see himself being friends with her or vice versa, therefore meaning she will not betray him.

Concerning Grover, Percy trusts him more than anyone else. Grover has been friends with Percy for a while now, with the former earning the latter’s trust. As such, Percy chose Grover for the quest as he needed someone who would never betray him by his side. The reasoning for choosing Annabeth and Grover to go on Percy Jackson episode 3’s quest was simply Percy’s response to the lines of the prophecy. The titular hero wishes to avoid the undesirable elements of the future, choosing his companions with this in mind.

Percy Jackson’s Books Prove That Prophecies Can Be Misleading

Prophecies can come true in ways people do or do not expect.

As will be explored later in Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1, prophecies from the Oracle are always misleading. In the books, and likely in future episodes of Percy Jackson, the character is told that he should not attempt to decipher prophecies. The words of the Oracle always have multiple meanings, and the prophecies often spouted always include some surprises.

This is especially the case for those who try to make sense of the Oracle’s words. Trying to uncover a prophecy before it happens leads heroes to begin holding preconceived notions of what the prophecy is speaking of, just as Percy is in episode 3. However, as the unfolding mystery of Percy Jackson and the Olympians will prove, prophecies will always come true one way or another, only sometimes in ways heroes do not expect.
