Percy Jackson Season 2 Update Confirms Progress & Disney+ Renewal Status

Percy Jackson Season 2 Update Confirms Progress & Disney+ Renewal Status

Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2 gets a promising new update. Based on the popular book series by author Rick Riordan, the new Disney Plus fantasy series follows the young Demigod Percy (Walker Scobell) and his two friends, Annabeth (Leah Jeffries) and Grover (Aryan Simhadri) as they attempt to prevent a war between the Olympians. The Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1 finale brought the show’s debut outing to an end on Tuesday, with no official announcement yet regarding a renewal.

A new report from Variety reveals that a writers’ room for Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2 has now been assembled, with co-showrunners Jon Steinberg and Dan Shotz saying that things are progressing nicely. While a writers’ room is certainly a promising sign, Disney has not yet officially given the green light to season 2. Check out Steinberg’s comment about the show’s future below:

“There is an awareness on everyone’s part that the demand for the show seems to suggest we should probably not stop making it.”

Will Percy Jackson & The Olympians Season 2 Happen?

Why The Disney Plus Show Is Likely To Return

Percy Jackson Season 2 Update Confirms Progress & Disney+ Renewal Status

After two lackluster Percy Jackson movie adaptations, the Disney Plus show has been much more positively received. The series currently boasts a strong 97% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, with the audience score also commendable at 81%. The Percy Jackson and the Olympians reviews share particular praise for the show’s faithfulness to the books, with Riordan himself heavily involved in the venture as a creator and writer of several episodes.

While Disney Plus hasn’t released any official viewership figures for the show, the series’ Nielsen rankings have been strong. From December 25–31, Percy Jackson and the Olympians‘ first full week of availability on the streamer, Variety reports that the show was watched for a staggering 700 million minutes, making it the third-most-watched streaming original that week.

Despite the positive reviews and strong viewership, the show is evidently not cheap to make. Due to its effect-driven nature, the series has a reported budget of $10 to $15 million per episode. With such a high price tag, the bar for success – and thus a season 2 renewal – is higher. That being said, it’s clear that the showrunners are confident in Percy Jackson and the Olympians‘ future, and the opening of a writers’ room means an official season 2 announcement may not be far off.
