Percy Jackson Season 1 Episode 4 Recap: 6 Biggest Story Reveals

Percy Jackson Season 1 Episode 4 Recap: 6 Biggest Story Reveals

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 4.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 4 continued the titular character’s long quest, providing a whole host of new story reveals about the world of Greek gods. After the story reveals of Percy Jackson episode 3, the quest toward the Underworld to retrieve Zeus’ master bolt continued. Percy Jackson episode 3’s prophecy meant that Percy, Annabeth, and Grover were beginning to trust each other despite Percy’s warnings not to from the Oracle as he will eventually be betrayed. That said, Percy Jackson episode 4 begins with a closer-knit trio than previous episodes have depicted.

This bodes well for the potentiality of Percy Jackson season 2, with the cast of characters already following the arcs of the original book series. However, concerning the story of season 1, episode 4 continued to outline the peril and dangers of the world of Percy Jackson‘s Greek mythological creatures. These dangers were spearheaded by Echidna, the mother of all monsters, and Chimera in Percy Jackson episode 4, leading to a slew of story reveals about the gods, their children, and the world in which they inhabit.

6 Annabeth’s Backstory Is Revealed In Percy Jackson Episode 4

Details about Annabeth’s birth and mortal family are provided.

Some of the more immediate story reveals found in Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 4 relate to Annabeth and her life before Camp Half-Blood. Prior to Percy Jackson episode 4, all that has been revealed about Annabeth’s life is that she was living on the streets at age 7 only to be found by Luke and Thalia before the trio made it to Camp Half-Blood. However, Percy Jackson episode 4 introduced more revelations about Annabeth’s life before this point, such as her birth and mortal family.

It was revealed in Percy Jackson episode 4 that Annabeth was not born conventionally given Athena’s status as the Greek goddess of wisdom. Rather than being born as all children are through childbirth, the offspring of Athena are genetically constructed from a thought in the goddess’s brain as a “gift” to whomever she falls in love with. They bear the same genetic traits as their mortal parent, though Athena’s celibacy and dedication to wisdom means her offspring are literal brainchildren of the Greek deity.

Annabeth reveals that this meant her early childhood was happy, as her father treated her as a “gift” from Athena. That said, Percy Jackson episode 4 also revealed that Annabeth’s father met another woman and sired more children which saw her family life turn sour. This led to her running away from home to be found by Luke and Thalia with Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 4’s main character reveals coming through Annabeth.

5 Grover Wishes To Become A Searcher To Look For The Lost God Pan

The lost god of nature is integral to most Satyrs’ journeys.

Percy Jackson Season 1 Episode 4 Recap: 6 Biggest Story Reveals

Arguably one of the more consequential story reveals of Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 4 concerning future plot points is the reveal that Grover wishes to search for the lost god Pan. After seeing a group of wild Centaurs in Percy Jackson episode 4, Grover reveals that the environmental damage to the world by humans deeply affects Satyrs and other Greek creatures who rely heavily on nature. Grover subsequently mentions that there was once a god dedicated to the upkeep of nature named Pan, though the damage to Earth caused by humans led to his disappearance.

After revealing Pan’s story, Grover mentions that the eventual end goal of most Satyrs is to become a Searcher rather than a Protector. The role of Searchers is different from Protectors who bring children to Camp Half-Blood, with the former group instead focusing on traversing the world to find the lost nature god. Grover reveals that it is his life’s dream to become a Searcher and find Pan, something that will become an incredibly important plot point in future seasons of Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

4 Echidna & Chimera Reveal Themselves As Episode 4’s Antagonists

Two more monstrous Greek mythological figures are introduced.

Shortly after some much-needed downtime on a train, another major story reveal of Percy Jackson episode 4 comes in the form of the episode’s antagonists. These antagonists are Echidna and Chimera. In Greek mythology, Echidna is the mother of all monsters with Chimera being one of her children. The two attack Percy, Annabeth, and Grover on a train which forces the trio to flee into downtown St. Louis. This leads to the climactic action sequence of Percy Jackson episode 4 and more story reveals about the Disney+ show.

3 The St. Louis Arch Is An Athenian Temple

Possibly one of the main strengths of the Percy Jackson book series was author Rick Riordan’s ability to take normal aspects of the real world and blend them with Greek mythology. This continued in Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 4 with the reveal that the St. Louis Gateway Arch is an Athenian temple. Percy Jackson episode 4 reveals that all Athenian children have a love of architecture as they desire to build something long-lasting as a tribute to their mother.

Annabeth discloses that most national monuments in the United States were built by Athena’s children as a tribute to their godly parent. These sites become temples to Athena, thus protecting her children and other demigods from monsters throughout the country. The St. Louis Gateway Arch is one of these monuments that was built by a child of Athena, with Percy Jackson episode 4 also divulging that Annabeth wishes to build something similar to honor her mother.

2 Athena Punishes Annabeth, Percy, & Grover For Medusa’s Head

The children face the wrath of the Olympian gods.

However, Annabeth’s dedication to her mother is quickly soured with another of Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ episode 4 story reveals. Just as Alecto was shown to speak in Percy’s mind in episode 1, Percy Jackson episode 4 shows Echidna doing the same to Annabeth. Annabeth reveals to Percy and Grover, and thus the audience, Echidna’s words shortly after. According to Echidna, Athena felt disrespected by Annabeth’s complicity in Percy mailing Medusa’s head to Olympus. As retribution for this, Athena removes her magic from the St. Louis Arch meaning Echidna and Chimera can follow the core trio of Percy Jackson episode 4 into the building.

1 Percy Falls From The St. Louis Arch & Encounters Poseidon’s Messengers

Poseidon’s help is finally offered to Percy Jackson.

Throughout the first three episodes of Percy Jackson season 1, the titular character has often been shown as resentful of his father. From Poseidon’s absence and abandonment of Percy and Sally to the lack of help and seeming care shown by the god of the sea towards Percy, the character has largely viewed his father as an antagonistic presence. That said, a major story reveal of Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 4 shows that Poseidon does care about his son as his help is finally received.

At the end of the episode, Percy locks himself at the top of the St. Louis Gateway Arch with Echidna and Chimera to give Annabeth and Grover time to escape. After a brief battle with the Chimera, Percy falls from the top of the arch only to be saved by his father. Under the Mississippi River, Percy meets a Nereid – a water nymph. The Nereid reveals that she is one of Poseidon’s messengers and tells him that his father does care and that it is difficult for Poseidon to sit idly by as Percy suffers.

The episode ends with Percy discovering his ability to breathe underwater, a power granted to him due to his nature as a son of Poseidon. This in and of itself is a major story reveal of Percy Jackson episode 4 due to the immense power Percy now possesses. Going forward, Poseidon’s help of Percy will somewhat grow, stemming from the reveal that he does care after Percy falls from the St. Louis Arch in Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 4.

New episodes of Percy Jackson and the Olympians release every Tuesday on Disney+.
