Percy Jackson Is Already Making A Season 2 Book Character’s Introduction Even More Emotional

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 1 and the book Sea of Monsters.

Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians is already making a season 2 book character’s introduction more emotional with one other character’s slight changes. Percy Jackson and the Olympians‘ season 1 ending leaves the door open for a potential season 2 to easily pick up right from the finale. This would see season 2 following the events of Rick Riordan’s second book in the Percy Jackson series, Sea of Monsters.

While it’s evident that Disney’s adaptation stays true to the fundamentals of the book series, some minor changes to the Percy Jackson books elevate individual characters’ storylines. For instance, Luke’s backstory, including his mother and Hermes, happens earlier than in the books and Annabeth’s changing views on the gods’ selfishness is emphasized much more in the series. With changes to characters that facilitate deeper looks into their inner workings, Percy Jackson and the Olympians effectively establishes dynamics and sets up future relationships.

Annabeth’s Regrets Teased In Percy Jackson Season 1 Relate To Thalia

In Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 6, Hermes shows Percy a time when he hurt someone he loved and offers to do the same for Annabeth, but she pulls away. While it isn’t directly confirmed which event she was worried about seeing, it’s most likely the attack on Thalia. This is referenced from episode 2 when Luke tells Percy about Zeus’ daughter Thalia and from Grover in episode 3. Then, more notably, when in the Asphodel Fields in episode 7, Annabeth gets trapped because she has regrets, again suggesting what happened to Thalia weighs heavily on her.

Moreover, Annabeth doesn’t seem to willingly open up about Thalia to Percy beyond defending her as a formidable demigod. This suggests that the topic is a sore spot for her. Why Annabeth’s pent-up guilt is an important story piece alongside the references to her friendship with Thalia is because it cleverly foreshadows the latter’s eventual return. In Riordan’s Sea of Monsters, Thalia returns to her human form, much to Annabeth’s surprise. For Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Thalia’s return will likely be an emotional interaction because of season 1’s groundwork to set up Annabeth’s pain over losing her.

Although Percy Jackson and the Olympians accurately connects Luke and Annabeth to Thalia, Annabeth’s longing seems more poignant. Before leaving for the quest and departing from Camp Half-Blood for the next school year, Annabeth is shown solemnly visiting Thalia’s tree. However, Luke’s link to both demigods is still important. Since he will not be at the camp in a possible Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2 and Annabeth heard his entire Kronos plan, she will likely have other friends who she met through Luke on her mind, namely Thalia.

While Annabeth won’t necessarily question Thalia after Luke’s unexpected turn to Kronos, recurrently having Annabeth explore her longing for her friendship with Thalia and for the time before Luke left could make Thalia’s return all the more emotional. Moreover, this can contribute to even further deepening of Annabeth’s character, something season 1 has done much more than the book, since it’s not confined to solely Percy’s perspective. Drawing on Annabeth’s inner struggles and relationships outside just Percy even more in Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2 can make Thalia’s introduction memorably emotional for fans and the Wise Girl.
