Percy Jackson Episode 7’s Sally Flashbacks Tragically Pays Off A Subtle Hermes Moment

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 7.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 7 features a series of Sally Jackson flashbacks which pay off a subtle Hermes moment from the episode prior. Percy Jackson episode 6’s biggest story reveals centered around Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hermes. The god of travelers was present at the Lotus Hotel and Casino and initially did not want to aid Percy on his quest until Annabeth mentioned Luke’s name. More details then emerged about Luke’s mother in Percy Jackson and the Olympians – May Castellan – which led to Hermes revealing his tragic backstory with the Castellan family.

Interestingly, these sequences changed the Percy Jackson books for the show by being new additions. These book changes somewhat continued into Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 7 by paying off on a tease from Hermes the episode prior. After Hermes tells Percy that being around someone you love can be heartbreakingly detrimental to both people, the god says that he knows Percy is aware of what that feels like. He touches Percy’s arm, showing a brief glimpse of a flashback. This flashback was paid off in Percy Jackson episode 7, adding context to Hermes’ scenes a week earlier.

Percy Jackson Episode 7’s Sally Flashbacks Explained

Firstly, it is worth exploring what the flashbacks entailed in Percy Jackson episode 7. These moments followed from a scene in the premiere of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, specifically when Percy was expelled from school as he saw a Pegasus on a roof across the street. The flashbacks in Percy Jackson episode 7 then detail Sally’s attempts at enrolling Percy in another school despite the apparent issues the education system pins on the son of Poseidon.

The flashbacks connect to Hermes’ words in Percy Jackson episode 6 by showing that the titular character was upset by his mother’s persistence, stating that Sally was trying to get rid of him. Eventually, Poseidon appears and speaks to Sally, explaining how the situation she is in is not fair but that these painful situations are what is best for both Percy and Sally. This harkens back to Hermes’ words, with the god of travelers telling Percy that it was Poseidon who told him not to interfere in Luke and May’s lives.

Does Percy Jackson Episode 7 Prove Hermes Right?

These flashbacks beg the question of whether Hermes was correct in Percy Jackson episode 6. The pain that Sally was causing Percy and vice versa is certainly evident in the Percy Jackson episode 7 flashbacks, though it is hard to ultimately say that Hermes was correct. After all, neither Sally nor Percy intended to hurt one another and it was simply the bad hand they had been dealt in life that was causing the tragic situation that unfolded.

This situation also applies to Hermes, Luke, and May. Hermes staying away from Luke and May likely would not have changed anything as what happened to May was not directly Hermes’ fault despite Luke’s belief that it was. While being around someone you love can be detrimental to both parties as Hermes stated, other outside factors can play a larger role. This was proven by Percy Jackson and the Olympians‘ episode 7 flashbacks of Sally and Percy, which simultaneously paid off episode 6’s Hermes hints.
